Skills you need to learn as a journalist: begging editors not to cut your work because you love it so much and they'll rip the soul out of it if they so much as touch one single carefully-crafted word. I've just told an editor at Hesari that I will cry if they cut my column for this Sunday's paper!

Another angle I found interesting is that maybe the ongoing revenues which the Russian money generates do more to fund support for Ukraine over the long term. It's certainly not black and white, cut and dried.

From what I understand it's not about "wasting time". Belgium has some legitimate and understandable concerns about its own safety/security and potential legal liabilities.

Chasing tennis balls is fun until you find a stick. Then nothing else matters except the stick!

There's one more new book on my list, by Veli-Pekka Lehtola, called "Whose country, whose voice?" I've yet to have the pleasure of meeting Veli-Pekka, but he writes about many of the same Indigenous / Sámi issues that I've been focused on this year.

Not that I'm friends with Sanna Marin or anything.

Some friends of mine have new books out, and it will take me an eternity to ever get through them. My Finnish read-rate is a million times slower than in English: @charlyjsp.bsky.social - Tuntematon tulevaisuus; Paavo Teittinen Pitkä Vuoro. Thank goodness Sanna Marin is releasing hers in English!

It's a blue sky Sunday but the remnants of Storm Amy are still being felt with blustery winds.

I know, it's my story in The Times! I was just expanding on it here and using more quotes and pictures than I was able for The Times.

Jim sadly passed away a few years after I wrote that article, but he did publish a fourth book in the series and they are very dark Nordic noir!

Many herders also want to see large carnivore numbers reduced to the levels before Finland joined the EU in 1995.

“Money cannot compensate for years of work that is completely wasted if predators kill breeding reindeer,” says Nilla Hirvasvuopio.

“Hunting is one solution to the problem."

Herders are entitled to claim compensation for their losses. There’s an EU fund of €10 million, but they say it’s not nearly enough, and are calling for the amount to be doubled.

🐻 Aslak says a bear “finishes what it starts, and you can see there’s not so much left.”

Wolverines will bite the reindeer's neck between the shoulder blades. Sometimes they drink the animal’s blood, but leave meat on the carcass for later.

🐺 "But usually when they kill they grab by the neck, suffocate it and crack the windpipe so then they can’t breathe. If they are hungry, the wolves open up the stomach, and eat from the chest, but many times they just kill the reindeer then move on to kill another.”

Sámi reindeer herder and filmmaker Aslak Paltto from Lemmenjoki told me (a lot!) more about predator kill methods: 🐺 “Wolves can attack from behind and they grab the back leg. Sometimes you find a reindeer and the wolf has taken pieces out of the rump but the reindeer is still alive."

“It takes about three years for a reindeer to start producing calves. When the female reindeer are killed by predators, there will be no new calves to keep the herd vibrant and productive,” says Juho. 📸 Juho Seppänen

“The amount of killed reindeer frustrates me, because my source of livelihood goes down with them. It makes me angry when I see reindeer killed by wolves but not being eaten.” 📸 Juho Seppänen
