Spent the day promoting the Woodland Trust’s TREE OF THE YEAR 2025 competition on National and Regional Radio; and when I wasn’t doing that, I was gleefully finding baby caterpillars in fresh peas!

Come to see me, a man who is fascinated by nature, the shifting of the seasons and agricultural reform, play Levin - a man who is fascinated by nature, the shifting of the seasons and agricultural reform…

Delighted to have formalised my long-standing relationship with the Manta Trust.

They’re a fantastic organisation, rooted in proper research and conservation science, and I look forward to pushing the value of such an enigmatic species for decades to come.

“Anna Karenina” rehearsals kicked off today. Utterly pleasant to swap my current ecology and conservation hat for Russian history and LOTS of emotions!

Sadly, the ophiologist (🐍) in me was left disappointed by what was lying in wait behind this door…:

I’m keen to share some of the wonderful things I saw in India with DSWF, but loathed to share them via Meta or X, yet Bluesky doesn’t quite seem like the place for photos.

Open to suggestions.

Here’s a sneaky peek…

I’m out in Assam, celebrating #MaghBihu, and supporting two fantastic conservation organisations.

I’ve seen some amazing animals, and one true success story - that of the Greater One-horned Rhino.

From c.100 individuals in early 1900s, now globally more than 4,000; half are here in Kaziranga NP!

My feline pennethworth:

Firstly, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE BRITISH LYNX!!

But, these Lynx releases purely spark fierce debate (and little else.) To think these rogue releases will result in a beaver-like reevaluation of the species’ status in the country is just wrong. 1/6

For carroty context: Not wanting to inform the enemy that RAF night-fighter aircraft had airborne radar, a legend was created to explain Cunningham's successes: from a diet of vitamin A gained from eating carrots, his eyesight was so exceptional, he could see in the dark like a domesti cat.

…the RAF Museum have only gone and immortalised him as a cuddly carrot!!!

My first cousin twice removed was RAF ace, night-fighter, Group Captain John “Cat's Eyes" Cunningham.

He was always a legend, both in our family & further afield - see:

- but now…

Child #1’s bedtime story of choice this week is Pankhurst & the suffragettes.

It’s perilous to explain ‘law-breaking when the laws are wrong’ to a 3yr old.

Fortunately, the parable of “the world is burning, and the people in charge don’t care *yet*” works well:

Absolutely fantastic! Finally got around to reading @davehone.bsky.social’s “Future of the Dinosaurs”. A sublime overview of our planet’s previous inhabitants. Especially enjoyed his use of comparative ecology to hit home current theories of Dino-behaviour. Finished final chapter suitably attired:

If I have one regret following Vikings: Valhalla, it is of having not pushed Jeb to write a scene where a bunch of Vikings chow down on spit-roasted Great Auks. They must have encountered that wonderful northern “penguin” everywhere they went. (Approaches @chiffchat.bsky.social about a book idea!)

Stilton has legal protection; our oldest Trees do not. To say nothing of biodiversity or carbon, ancient trees are aligned with our history, our identity and our culture.
