Recognising that the US is no longer a trustworthy security partner is scary and very expensive. But a failure to make defence and spending decisions that reflect that fact now will lead to much scarier and much more expensive consequences later on.

It obviously serves US (and now, Russian) interests for European NATO to cling to the idea of the US as the indispensible ally. Since November, the Trump team has been using its Europe-whisperers to reassure policymakers and analysts; many have been desperate to believe them.

The security of the rest of Europe cannot be separated from Ukraine's security - something European politicians often say but few appear to believe. Europe's security - including that of Ukraine - also requires policymakers to recognise that the US is no longer a credible ally.

I know that this is an issue that most European policymakers don't want to acknowledge, but it needs to be said, clearly and often: the Trump administration have aligned with Russia. They don't see NATO members as allies and they appear not to care at all about Europe's security.
