Nearly finished this painting of a tree lines lane near Ambleside. It was near twilight and the lane was darkening.

Much missed. I just about remember the dutch elm disease from the 1970s. Much to my amazement I saw some big elms at Stanley Park in Blackpool in the early 2000s. Even those are gone I think.

I always seem to be painting one season behind. It’s winter, yet I’m still absorbed in autumn’s colours. Maybe I just need a whole season to digest all the visual riches it offers.

Added the finishing touches to this Lake District landscape tonight. Next week I'm posting it to it's new owner.

After months of revisiting this landscape, I finally found the balance between too much detail and the energy of paint itself. Here’s how roughening the surface brought the painting back to life.

I'm stacking up the paintings of Langdale tonight. The one on the bottom is nearly finished. Plenty to do though, just keep painting...

Glorious. Amazing. Superb. Glad I'm a visual artist because words fail me when trying to describe the Lake District on a day like today! #lakedistrict #cumbria

Looking back at some recent paintings and grouping them together in a corner of the studio. Unusually for me, I'm actually quite happy with these recent Lake District paintings. More to come!

Seat Sandal from Grasmere. A little painting (9x12 inches) completed last week. I've got a new painting easel for working outside, so this painting was used to test it out in the studio before Intake it on location.

Making progress with this #LakeDistrict painting of Loughrigg, near Ambleside. This painting has been a work in progress for several months, but I think I'm nearly there. 🤞

The Musee D'Orsay was amazing, of course, but standing in the queue for 45 minutes on the hottest Paris day for decades was a 'challenge' I don't want to repeat!

In Paris to see the #Hockney exhibition. Just blown away by his creativity and vision. Looking at the world through his eyes feels like a superpower!

A quiet night in the studio and I'm painting this Lake District landscape - Stockley Bridge in Borrowdale.

I've been painting this for at least 3 months now and still not quite right. I need more chaos in the brush strokes because, as usual, my brush strokes are too tight and prissy.

Adding some drama to this view of Pavey Ark - I want to get in some lively, rhythmic brush strokes to suggest the rocky crag face. Still a work in progress...

Today is a 'starting a new painting day’ - one of my favourite days! This one will be Pavey Ark and Jacks Rake when it's finished.

Working on 3 paintings today. Trying to get interesting brush strokes in the foreground. I like to go almost full abstract in certain areas.

Details matter! Concentrating on these two trees on my latest painting. Can't paint every leaf, but which leaves to leaf out? 😂

A dark winter night in the studio, painting sunlight on mountains. Ideal!

Another view of Eagle Crag in Borrowdale. I've worked on a few versions of this scene over the last 12 months - both for myself and for commissions. I'm interested in the way the creeps from behind the mountain to the right, brushing the sides of the fell with a lovely golden light.

Re-working this Borrowdale painting today. Trying to get lots of crisp, bright brush strokes.

Finding this book a fascinating read. As a landscape painter I always take an interest in the geology underneath the landscape, just as a figure painter must be interested in anatomy.

Sometimes I get too caught up in details. The only cure is to get the big brushes out. Much happier now with the way this painting is developing.

Nearly there with this new painting of the Langdales. I'm going to leave it alone for a few days so it 'settles' in my head. Then I'll know what finishing touches to add.
