It’s incredibly powerful writing. Simple, short and direct.

Even if it was considered necessary at the start, it is interesting to see how any system can be perverted. Now there is a President who thinks he only needs to serve those states where he received the EC votes, and can punish the rest. Would he act differently if it was based on popular vote?

I thought federalism was mainly addressed through congress, particularly how each state has 2 senate seats. Maybe someone could explain how the election of the President / executive requires an electoral college to support Federalism, because that isn’t obvious to me.

Apart from how adolescent this is, it’s a gift to Carney.

Completely agree Peggy. Here’s what I wrote to the Sun.

Canada, like all nations, practices trade protectionism. Hard to imagine that will ever be completely eliminated. Are we looking for purity tests? Or should we look to lower those barriers to reduce the leverage of the hegemons? Carney’s speech may help him make that case domestically.

I see his comments as being about the effects of Trump, as opposed to a more sweeping comment about the last few decades. I get that some on the left have this view. I just think they’re mistaken if they think Carney’s speech makes the conclusion that the last 80 years have been a lie.

Citizens get to vote. It’s an ongoing shame of all western countries that so many barely give it any thought.

Yeesh math used to be my strong suit. Remaining 72%.

Can’t disagree. But with US born players representing 27-28% of the league, I wonder how many of the remaining 78% on US based teams actually register to vote.

Actually not an issue. Poilievre has said he wouldn’t attend the WEF. So there’s that.

Curious to know what the size of GAC is to now compared to pre pandemic.

Interesting. Never saw it as being focused primarily on class. It was there, but I saw it more about one young man’s personal challenges. But i guess that’s what is fundamental about art - we each draw from it what we will.

Not a local kid (but very much enjoyed my one visit to Boston). I guess as a Canadian I perhaps don’t understand the class distinctions in America through which you view this movie. I just saw it as funny scene where someone who needed it was taken down a peg.
January 19, 2026 at 5:18 AM
Huh. I’m not American, and went to university, but nonetheless enjoyed that scene. Saw it as a different take on the Marshall McLuhan scene from Annie Hall. We all would like a friend who can shut down self important gasbags. Unless you’re the gasbag, I guess.

In Canada it’s just called hockey. (I mean, Ice Hockey Night in Canada sounds weird and is not a thing)

And to the people of Minneapolis, you would say . . . ?
January 13, 2026 at 11:10 PM
Agree on both counts. But it raises an important question of what we would have said back then - when the term was yet to be in use.
January 12, 2026 at 12:14 AM
Sure it’s not 1937 Russia. Not yet. But apparently they’re on the highways stopping and checking people trying to leave Minneapolis

We evacuated our kids out of Minneapolis this weekend and my spouse reports that as she drove them out of town she saw "multiple freeway exits where people are being pulled over." It feels like the Twin Cities is being subjugated by a hostile occupying force.

Congratulations! That’s exactly the point I was making about the slogan. If you have to explain it, you’ve already lost. And that’s what happened.
January 8, 2026 at 5:04 AM
Defund literally means don’t fund. Sure it wasn’t the exact intent. But you are way, way overestimating how many people understood “that defund doesn’t mean remove all funding”. Maybe with your friends. But not the general public. It was a shitty slogan. Accept it and come up with something better.

I remember that episode vividly

Did you watch the games?

Gotta love the great Cdn tradition of making snide remarks when the junior team fails to win gold.

How old are you Andrea? You make a habit of calling teenagers jerks?
