And we need to consider the source as well. Any legitimate news outlet is going to verify and somehow prove any reporting to avoid lawsuits or damage to their reputation. And for the most part these reports ultimately end up being true. But we need more than hearsay and third party rumors.

Or, the media got out ahead of themselves on a false report? It's happened before and that's why so many don't trust the media. Too many syndicates and reporters are willing to jump the gun to put their name on the latest news break.

This is true. The Clash did have variation unlike a lot of the more pure Punk groups like The Sex Pistols and Black Flag. I think that's what made the Clash more of a crossover commercially successful Punk rock group.
