Hot take from a therapist: children are not manipulative. They’re not trying to enact some hidden agenda. Their agenda is obvious: they just want to get their needs met. If they’re testing limits, that doesn’t mean they’re bad. It means they’re feeling powerless and want connection or control.

We do therapy the way we do everything else in our lives. If you worry your therapist is judging you for xyz, you probably also worry your friends/family are judging you for xyz. Those are things to notice and bring up with your therapist! Let’s talk about it. It will help.

When we sense that we’ve let someone down, the guilt we feel is often less about “right” and “wrong” and more about the fear of being left out in the cold, emotionally.
Healing is about learning to see guilt not as a sign that you’re “bad” but as a reminder of how much relationships matter to you.
