This DAC facility, called “Mammoth,” has begun operations. Built by the Swiss company Climeworks, it removes CO2 directly from the air and stores it underground by converting it into stone. About 10 times larger than its predecessor, Orca, Mammoth is powered by Iceland’s geothermal energy.

Texas is getting 2 round-trips per day with its batteries. Charging overnight on cheap wind, discharging to meet the morning peak. Then charging on cheap solar during the day, and discharging again during the evening peak. gridstatus.io. 600 cycles per year under this scheme, “capacity" is solved.

Behind-the-meter génération or on-site power, such as Gas turbines, solar arrays, battery storage, or all three are now offered to data center developers but is it reslistic? Whatever makes sense for the load profile and the site.

En 2024, les batteries ont dépassé la capacité du pompage hydraulique comme filière de stockage en Chine, soit 135 GW. Les batteries ne représentaient pourtant pas grand chose en 2021. On peut se demander quelle sera la capacité à la fin de 2025.

GFL Inverter: Acts as a current source, using a Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) to synchronize with the existing grid voltage. It injects current based on measured grid conditions.
GFM Inverter: Behaves like a voltage source, actively shaping its own voltage waveform (amplitude, phase, frequency).

This chart by Michael Liebreich and team shows how much it would cost on average to decarbonize increasing shares of the US power grid. What is striking is that 90% of the power grid could be decarbonized at less than $125/tCO2. A relatively reasonable decarbonization cost.
