The Old Main view during the first class of my senior capstone on Empathy, Morality, & AI. Lots of interesting reactions to my opening empathy conversation with a chatbot ❤️ 🤖. Changing up the course too in the age of AI

If you like roadside attractions, go over the mountain from State College to see the giant Santa in Philipsburg. It's the largest in Pennsylvania. For scale, I'm about as tall as the knee. This just barely tops the giant coffee pot in Bedford, in terms of large roadside displays

One of our favorite family traditions every year is our own take on the Jólabókaflóð. We sit around with a roaring fire and warm beverages, and read books to ourselves and our kids. For me this year, some moral philosophy, social horror, and science fiction. We are book lovers to our core. 📚🔥

Merry Christmas and/or Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate. At the Allen Street gates at Penn State (pardon the street light). Coming from a family that celebrates both, We Are. I hope you find light, warmth, and rest this season.

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas and the Christmas train are a seasonal highlight. Between this and the England trip, I've enjoyed hearing "Happy Christmas" this year

With His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward during the Wilton Park empathy & polarization conference in England this month. This was with the Penn State contingent of excellent colleagues. Excited for more transatlantic conversations to champion empathy

Last reflection from @wiltonpark.bsky.social empathy meeting. In a time when empathy is increasingly being challenged, it is important to bring people together and show the value of empathy & compassion in mutual inquiry toward a better world. Seeing communal, collective empathy choice is powerful.

A few moments from the @wiltonpark.bsky.social conference on empathy in West Sussex, UK. What a beautiful and historical place to bring together an interdisciplinary group to think about empathy and its role in society. We talked a lot about what strongly and boldly choosing empathy looks like

Ten years ago, I was here at Penn State interviewing for a social psych position, aiming to improve our lives. I recall watching the tree lighting ceremony from dinner, walking through frigid wind to try the best coffee. As we go to the lighting with our now 13-year-old tonight, feeling grateful.

Just kidding. Here's one picture of my autumn latte, full of empathic effort and moral signals. In all seriousness, sitting and talking about ideas over coffee is what got me into moral psych as an undergrad. Team science, with a couple extra shots of philosophy, is where it's at.

Kudos to @byrdnick.com for an excellent talk on cognitive reasoning, philosophical thought experiments, and public-focused decision-making for the Consortium on Moral Decision-Making. Much food for thought, see the video on the Consortium website.

It wouldn't be a fall season on Penn State's campus without a visit to the bright orange sugar maples in front of Old Botany. A little post peak. But beautiful all the same

I had a wonderful visit to UVA for their Social Psychology Speaker Series. It was great to reconnect with folks from my time at UNC and Iowa, chat with the faculty and students about empathic AI. The sense of history brings me back to my time growing up as a Virginian, which I'll always appreciate.
