…and audio book narration also requires investments in training and equipment, and auditions which mostly won’t lead to work.

It’s also one gig at a time usually, so work isn’t guaranteed.

Audio book narrators are paid per finished hour, not per hour of work.

It takes me about 5.5 hours to produce one finished hour.

$750 for a 5 hour book= $27/hr of work. Not bad, tho remember no taxes or benefits.

$750 for a 20 hr book= $6.81/hr of work. That’s why the rate is poor…

…is almost always gig work. You don’t show up every day at regular hours and collect a check on Friday. You sink hours into auditions you never get paid for, thousands of $’s into equipment and training, and there are still plenty of times you don’t have work.

I sure wish that’s how it worked.

Narrators are paid per finished hour of audio, not per hour of work. So a 20 hour-long book represents at least 80 hours of work (and that’s working very fast). So it’s actually $750/80=$9.38 per hour. Not so good.

Also, audio book narration…

It varies, but 4-6 hours per finished hour (PFH) of audio is a common rule.

Don’t accept work at this rate! Some authors/producers genuinely don’t know, so trying to politely and respectfully explain the situation might work, too.
