I know a manuscript is about ready to submit once the dedicated '_Scraps' document is the same length as the manuscript itself. 🥲

A potential way to relieve arthritic knees without drugs or surgery.

New study led by a @price.utah.edu professor shows gait retraining could significantly ease pain and slow cartilage damage.

Lead researcher Scott Uhlrich measures a participant’s gait. At the beginning of the study, participants received a baseline MRI and walked on a force-sensitive treadmill while motion-capture cameras recorded their walking mechanics.

Exciting news! Today I received an NOA from the National Institute on Aging funding my F32 Postdoctoral Fellowship.

A massive thank you to everyone who helped along the way, truly could not have gotten here without the incredibly supportive folks in my corner.

I’m sharing our work on tendon fluid alterations after injury at #ISB2025!

Looking forward to seeing some friends at the Tendon Biomechanics II session today at 15:30.

Can we alter older adult gait energetics by stiffening their footwear? Beats me! But I bet if you swing by Footwear & Foot Orthoses tomorrow (7/30) @10:40am in room C4 you might find out. See you there 🤓 #ISB2025

... increasing arch stiffness had differential effects on metabolic cost depending on the strike type!

Suggesting perhaps arch energy storage and return itself did not alter metabolic cost. Rather, arch motion looks to be altering how the muscles (particularly the calf muscles) function. (2/2)

Last publication from my dissertation out now (www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....)

We increased foot arch spring stiffness in a simple, 2D computational model and examined rearfoot and non-rearfoot strike running. Increasing stiffness reduced arch energy storage/return in both, BUT... (1/2)

These results suggest carbon fiber insoles may be beneficial for those with ankle plantar flexor deficits (e.g., older adults - shameless plug for our groups’ presentations next week at #ISB2025 👀).

Carbon fiber insoles have been shown to increase ankle joint moments and estimated soleus muscle forces while walking.

We provide evidence here that these benefits come without a clear metabolic penalty to the soleus, likely due to improved muscle operating conditions.

First postdoc publication online today in the Journal of Applied Physiology (@apspublishing.bsky.social)!

doi.org/10.1152/japp...

We used fascicle dynamics, ankle kinetics, and EMG to estimate soleus metabolic cost across walking speeds and footwear stiffnesses.
