The moment one stops looking for converts and starts looking for traitors is when one abandons any claims to being a progressive.
True progressives don't seek dividing lines. They try to find ways to surmount them.

The essay is 'Puritans and Prigs'. There are various copies knocking around the Web.

Marilynne Robinson got the measure of these people a long time ago:

They don't last that long I find. However, I bought one from Lidl a few years back and it's still going strong. Lidl does good cookwear.

I tend to agree. I saw no hostility expressed towards this girl. We were a very 'white' school in the Valleys in the 70s, so anything that broke up the monotony was welcome.
I fear for refugee kids because of what their classmates hear at home and are constantly subjected to from the gutter press.

I've remembered her name: Paola Robles. I often wonder if she settled in Swansea.
She showed me how to make jumping paper frogs.

In 1975 a girl suddenly appeared in our class. She was Chilean. I became friends with her. Her family, all academics, had fled the brutality of Pinochet's regime.
The overwhelming reaction from my classmates was one of curiosity, not hostility. I doubt it would be the same now.

Well, I'm glad to see you haven't blocked me yet, Dr. T. That would be a real cause for concern.

Yeah . A famous person. A blue tick. Naming no names..

Anyone who blindly trusts another person to gatekeep their social interactions isn't someone who I would want to be associated with anyway.

I'm on several shitlists, being accused of being a transphobe in particular because I liked a post of David Aaronovitch. Go figure.
AFAIAC, anyone who outsources their social gatekeeping to moderation lists is a bloody fool.

Please do. This issue is in danger of being forgotten about.

I was thinking about Hannan's own ancestral voices, the ones that told him by now we'd be living in a Richard Scarry post-Brexit tableau with flying cars and Rule Britannia playing from lamppost loudspeakers on an endless loop. Gardens with naked schoolmarms and endless Watneys Red Barrel.

Ringo Star singing about his love for a barely legal girl is very creepy.

Great. Let's make the perfect the enemy of the good. Or doing anything at all, do that matter.
Sometimes making sure something good happens involves getting your hands dirty.

I think that this might happen to be the most stupid idea I have ever had.

6. Instead of having a penalty shootout, chuck an extra ball on the pitch every five minutes during extra time.
