Dreams can sometimes shed incredible insight into human insecurities.

Last night’s dream: “I wanted to fly my fighter jet to school, but I just found out that my wife is leaving me.”

I’m also on way more social networks than she is, and I find good stuff all over the place. I don’t want to open four different apps just to share the stuff I like with her.

The main reason I want this is because my wife has this habit of sharing her favorite Tumblr posts with me. Basically, we go through all of her bookmarked posts until we get back to something we saw the last time we did this.

She calls it "sharing shinies", in reference to how corvids share rocks.

I've been thinking for a while about writing a simple app, because I haven't done app development before. The first thing I would love to make is a social bookmarking app for posts, that lets you save stuff into different categories.

Basically what Firefish had back in the day.

Hang in there, man, you will get through this. ♥️

I've been on the Fediverse for 15 years, done journalism for about 10 of them, did community management for about 3 years, and worked a professional tech background for roughly about 9 years?

Hopefully that's enough? 😅

A little proof of concept I've been working on, it's a version of Bluesky that you can run locally, even on your laptop, that pulls just the data you care about from the firehose, indexes it, and provides you an interface to view and interact with posts.

Imagine if toaster companies required you to buy proprietary bread that only worked in specific toaster models.

That's where we're at with so many printers.

As the face of your project's community, I can keep people excited about what you're building, field complaints and concerns, and keep the community feeling at ease about where the project is at.

I have prior experience from working on Diaspora, know the space extensively, and make friends easily.

Hey! Are you a CEO or project lead of a decentralized, open source communication platform or protocol? Are you tired of dealing with negative responses to your misinterpreted posts?

Hire me to be your comms person! I can be your community punching bag that keeps everyone happy and excited!

I beat Wolfenstein: The New Order yesterday, and started playing Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. What a series! I can’t believe I slept on these.

Gunplay is absolutely amazing, story is great, level design is absolutely killer. Loads of fun, and a perfect outlet for aggression and frustration.

Like, the tile generation system doesn't live in the Tile class (maybe it should), so I have these ugly functions off to the side in the Main Java file that do things like coordinate generation, map resets, character placement, etc.

It's really hard to decouple, because other stuff depends on it.

This isn't so bad, inheritance got me most of the way there. But my code looks so ugly now, and I kind of hate that the main loop of the program has to duct tape all these different parts together.

My current assignment is to make a text-based crawler where treasure items and traps exist as various tiles. When the player moves coordinates to a tile, it automatically performs a dedicated action, awards or deducts points, and marks the tile as visited, so that it happens only once.

One thing about refactoring that takes getting used to: moving functions into their own classes, creating object instances, and rewiring everything to use these new methods in a way that the program keeps working.

I've banged my head against the wall a lot today.

The computer science course I'm taking this semester is a lot of fun, but the most recent stuff is super challenging. It's all Java-based, which I'm actually doing okay with, but refactoring code to incorporate new concepts is super hard.

Also, implementing Linked Lists from scratch suuuuuucks.

It's just a starting point, completely unfiltered, but I've started a list of various clients and developers. I'll try to add more as I discover them in time.

Oof, that's painful.

Yeah, that's probably the direction I'll end up going.

Having similar challenges on the ActivityPub side. I know stuff is happening, but sometimes I really have to dig through various sources to find the good stuff.

Where's a good place to go to find all the cool stuff being built by Bluesky / ATproto devs? I want to start covering this stuff more closely.

Maybe @bmann.ca can steer me in the right direction?

Dogs, particularly beagles, have the uncanny habit of both being deep sleepers, and also discerning the slight crinkling sound of a bag of chips. By the time they hear it, you’re already too late, and they’re silently asking for some.
