They certainly were, but it's reassuring that one aspect of human nature is just beneath the surface ready to come out when catastrophe strikes.

When disaster strikes it is encouraging that humans behave well towards each other - as though they are made in the image of someone loving and altruistic. In an emergency, we act with creativity and compassion.
