xx <- ... is my garbage variable name. My instincts are to just use x, but my instincts also tell me I probably have used x in my actual code somewhere important

😍 How often do you run across the road for a cheeky swim at lunchtime?

One of my first jobs paid me with an actual handwritten cheque each fortnight. I had to sheepishly ask the office manager what to do with it, then was horrified to learn that I had inherited a chore each fortnight to cash it and get my money.

“If I could put it into a very few words, dear sir, I should say that our prevalent belief is in moderation. We inculcate the virtue of avoiding excesses of all kinds—even including, if you will pardon the paradox, excess of virtue itself.”

Hello 👋 I will soon have capacity to take on an additional project or engagement. If you, or someone you know are ramping up their #datascience capability, get in touch.

Easiest method is DM, email, stopping me in the street, flagging me down in moving traffic, or failing that, telephone.

In my latest blog I test the use of {ellmer} with 'seed' values to improve reproducibility in LLM responses for data analysis. Based on helpful suggestions from my below post. www.deanmarchiori.com/posts/2025-0...

I'm not trying to be difficult here. I'm just holding GenAI to the same standard as a cooking recipe book.

...people can and should decide themselves on how to describe what they do. This might be different to what their employers 'brand' them ( often arbitrary). And in any case, many of us end up taking on tasks that don't neatly fit into any definition - and this can be satisfying or necessary.

It sounds like a scientist of some sort. I think the specific job title would depend on the employer's industry and domain. Ive found in different industries, specific titles can be rich with meaning and be very different to equivalent activities in other fields.

AI is a bust: www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02...

Contrast this with an actual game changing technology like social media - people were fanging for accounts. Parents were asking their kids to help them get online. Nobody was forced onto social media, and charged an extra 40 bucks for privilege.
'Arrogance is astounding': Microsoft subscription price hike brings backlash

Ever look at reviews online? Don't be fooled by average star rating - the number of reviews matters too! ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ (2)

💡 The higher up you are on this chart, the higher your chance of a really bad stay. It turns out you really need 20+ reviews before you can rely on the star rating
