Companies really underestimate the collective spending power of mothers in households worldwide. Outside of big items like cars and TVs they hold all the spending power and are the key decision makers in purchasing choices

But we know Amazon will get some exemption and that’s why Bezos is donating millions to Trump and licking his boots- cause he knows it would destroy his business model.

Fair enough that was bad phrasing but in this thread I’ve also said twice it’s 70%. I’m not sure the value of this conversation - it’s not going to change the fact that 70% - the majority of products are Chinese - that’s the substantive issue. Let’s see if the tariffs are slapped on them
January 24, 2025 at 11:55 PM
Nope - I said from the start that 70% of the products are from
China - that’s a majority though

I work in this area doing digital marketing and it’s not all but the majority of products on Amazon are from China

We have rules about monopolies in Europe - supermarkets were prevented from dominating the market but for some reason the tech industry just completely escaped any regulation or control

So it might appear as an independent retailer but they’re just shifting products from China. If they used local producers they couldn’t compete unless they’re already a very established brand
January 24, 2025 at 10:39 PM
70% of products are from China though. Maybe not what you buy but even Amazon stores are basically drop shipping for Chinese goods - I think the margins are often too tight for independent retailers. I mean Prime will always win because of free shipping

I don’t think we really understood what we were destroying. I was one of those bedazzled by the range and now most of my favourite local shops are gone. I’m complicit in their demise. It hasn’t been a force for good in the end. The fact it’s a monopoly also doesn’t help
January 24, 2025 at 10:26 PM
Well it’s all coming from China so that’s why it’s so cheap.
January 24, 2025 at 10:23 PM
Fair enough - it definitely serves a function, esp for people like you or disabled people who struggle to access shops. But it seems their never ending objective to massively grow and increase profits has been at the destruction of so much in our own towns & cities
January 24, 2025 at 10:08 PM
In Ireland we didn’t have much outside our small cities, with local electronic/specialist shops & bookshops. All mostly shut down. Our cities have lost their soul. You could go into these experts, they’d order in what you needed. Their advice was far superior than a review left by some AI bot

What did you do before Amazon?
January 24, 2025 at 9:52 PM
Are there no online suppliers in your country/county or State that you can buy online from? Obviously your situation is different but let’s be honest most people are just buying nonsense they don’t really need half the time
January 24, 2025 at 9:49 PM
Not using Amazon is a win win situation. You’ll spend less, more money will flow to local businesses and by shopping in your country or local area you won’t contribute to increased fuel emissions. 70% of Amazon products originate in China so it should be slapped with some of those mega tariffs
