My brother (now 39) sounds similar to your son. Fortunately, he's doing better these days, but there have been very scary, rough patches.

"But we never know when it might change ". Exactly. Although I've never had to face this in terms of parent /child as you have, I did have to tell a cousin to stay away from my mother (stealing, gambling intimidation/ harassment were involved). It was not an easy decision but I feel it was correct
