The next time you call someone "hysterical," know that you're channeling the words of a man who believed that women's "madness" could be cured with marital rape.
Hippocrates attributed women's "madness" to the
uterus, which he believed would wander through the body if not full. As a cure, he prescribed regular marital sex, which would fill the uterus with semen (for their healing properties), and with pregnancies (to keep it from wandering). 3/

This.
This. They want to take away childcare and vaccines and public schools and Medicare and Medicaid and Social Security so women have to stay home to care for their loved ones and so men--and women who have to work for pay--are even more dependent on their employers than they are now.
Bridget Christie's line "Status is power's sickly cousin" seems relevant here. Sure having a stay-at-home spouse makes them more dependent on you. But it also makes you more dependent on your employer.

When I was pregnant with my first, I lived in a county that didn't have a hospital with labor & delivery. Well, labor progressed so fast, I ended up giving birth at home rather than risk the ~40 minute drive to the hospital where my OB was. I was lucky. Other moms won't be if these cuts go through.
Republicans' budget scheme is a death sentence for rural hospitals and maternal care.

Cutting Medicaid will devastate already-strained healthcare systems, leaving pregnant women and new moms without access to life-saving care.

Does that make America great?

"those who credit manufacturing jobs for a glorious past mistake correlation for causation. They think their grandparents had the 'good life' because of jobs in manufacturing. In reality, it was unions, pensions, high marginal tax rates, and strong social policies—with racism and sexism thrown in"

For a sobering look at where we're headed, I'd highly recommend this @slate.bsky.social interview with sociologist and legal scholar Kim Lane Scheppele, who lays out what it would take to keep the US from turning into Orban's Hungary.

I've been thinking a lot these past two weeks about an article I published a few years back, warning that when public institutions become dependent on people with money and power, they'll let the people with money and power get away with breaking the rules.

What an honor it is to be a voice. Thank you, Rep. Lauren Underwood, for your leadership, service to the 14th district, and willingness to do the work to get and give what people need. This was a cool surprise in my mailbox!

HOLDING IT TOGETHER made the @npr.org Books We Love list!

It's tagged as a staff pick, a book club idea, and an eye-opening read.

As Erica Liao wrote: "Some of the interviews may ruin your day with how angry they make you... [but there's] also a healthy dose of hope."
