By the time Splinter and Big Mama knew what was going on in their minds, it was too late. The boys had burned into their minds that their parents' unhappiness was their fault, and the resentment at having a childhood spent walking on eggshells could no longer be shaken.

It's all so disastrous, that eventually the boys start to resent themselves and their parents, until eventually all four of them snap.
It wasn't anything specific that caused it, it had just been going on so much for so many years that they couldn't take it anymore.

The boys are becoming more and more accustomed (resigned) to the idea that they'll have to cut one of their parents out of every activity. If Donnie wants to try out a new invention, then he only tells one of his parents.

That feeling is enhanced when they accidentally hear Big Mama say that if it were up to her, she would have sent Splinter to sleep with the fishes years ago, or at least ignored his existence, but she hasn't done it because she doesn't want to hurt the turtles.

The tension and the atmosphere are so tense and dense, that just when they were old enough to be able to go out alone, the boys offered (begged) to be allowed to walk between the lair and the hotel.

Over time, the hatred that Splinter and Mama have for each other is so great that they can't even see each other without wanting to kill each other, and they do a terrible job of hiding it, but they swallow it anyway for the sake of their children.

The boys seem to only have two brain cells that are fighting for third place, but they actually get all of that. They know their parents hate each other, and they know that both are willing to be unhappy so that they can have the most normal childhood possible.

After the divorce, they both tried to be civil, and I emphasize tried, because they really weren't. Every time they had to see each other to drop off or pick up the boys, they would throw at least one passive-aggressive comment at each other+

Imagine if Splinter and Big Mama did get married and managed to coexist long enough for the turtles to consider them their parents, but they divorced because Big Mama is still a manipulative bitch, and the only ones she doesn't manipulate are her babies.
