Pushing away who might not wish to budge opens doors to possibilities longed for, yet believed to be mere fiction. We want to open up, but what if we get hurt when we do?

Two kobolds continue their starlit conversation with mixed emotions flowing between them. Fraun, put off by Flake's response, has doubts about what he's getting into. This might be too much for him, but he gets the feeling that Flake has never really talked about this before. He asks, "Do you want to talk about it?" For a moment, the cold kobold experiences a glimmer of hope. Never have they heard those words; most find it easier to step back, ignore them, to disengage... maybe Fraun is different. They close their eyes and take a breath; it's... not safe to think those things. "I... shouldn't. It hurts to think about," they reply, eyes opening, staring deeply into space. A chill creeps out from them, but they don't appear to notice. Fraun, though nervous, remains where he is, even scooting closer. "Is it like a nightmare?" he asks as Flake tries to concentrate. Forced to think about it, the kobold remembers those eyes... those hands, reaching out to grab them. "Yes," they state, but they decide against this. "No," they say, attempting to push away the unsettling memory. "Kind of?" They close their eyes again, intent on shoving these emotions down. They continue, "I just want to understand why it happened. It can't be as simple as I think it is. But when I think, it hurts." Fraun replies, "I'm not sure I follow."

Protecting oneself varies from person to person; we sometimes push away the innocent showing real curiosity.

Two kobolds meet atop a hill. Saffraun climbs and calls out, "Flake? Is that you? I didn't know you liked stargazing~ Could I join?" Flake accepts, and Fraun joins them. "Thanks! It's so much quieter compared to the city." "Quiet is nice," Flake replies. "Isn't it?" Fraun exclaims, but he quickly realizes he is not that at all. "Oops-- Sorry. I'm usually by myself when I do this kind of thing, but that helps me think." "Mhm." Fraun does not recognize the non-committal hum and takes it for agreement, "Oh? What kinds of things do you think about?" He smiles. "You're always so quiet, I can't help being curious~" Flake turns their eye onto the other kobold, their expression unchanging. "I think about... the day I stopped feelings things. Mostly." Suffice to say, Saffraun is taken aback by this and may be regretting poking the quiet one of their little group.

A flashback of a particular moment.

A struggle between two kobolds; a green female pins Flake, a white kobold with blue markings, to the ground, choking them. The female is seen smiling, but it's only a memory, brushed away by the cruel present. Flake looks on in horror as cold magic swirls around them. Just before they lose consciousness, a spear of ice stabs straight through the female, freeing Flake and killing her. Text reads: "I remember loving you. You took me in. I called you Mom. So why did you smile if *this* was how you really felt? Why would you hurt me, knowing I could hurt *you* more?"

Old Timey likes his servants masked, identical, and devoid of emotion, but some parts peek through unbidden. For Vaudereaux, his horn remains, even as a Watchdog.

Technically their own species, bound to the masks and the Timekeeper himself.
