You really shouldn't trust politicians at all, regardless of party.

I personally think you should have to publish your tax returns to get on the ballot, no exceptions, considered for appointment? published tax returns up front. Term limits for everything.
You should be disqualified from public office if you have multiple bankruptcies, or any felony conviction.
