Stop normalizing AI, and call out people you've long enjoyed content/music from. People need to feel shame and embarrassment when they use AI.
A screenshot of a YouTube comments section from Jack Gardiner's "Enter Sandman but it's funk" video. My comment reads: "Disappointed to see the use of music AI. No solidarity for fellow musicians? Come on man, do better." There are two comments shown. The first, by a user named None2None: "You want him to hire a session musician to learn that song, record it, send it to him so he can mix it down. And pay for all that so he can put out one video on YouTube? We could be saying the same thing about using midi and samples for drums." The second from Jack Gardiner himself: "This is where I’m at a bit of a crossroads with AI man. Personally, I really don’t like the idea that AI is going to be a massive part of music in the coming years but at the same time, there’s no way we can stop it. I came across the version (linked in the description) over the Christmas holidays and quite frankly, it slaps haha! It inspired me to recreate it from scratch and put my own spin on it. I just think we have to find ways in which we as musicians can stay relevant. My intent is not to replace musicianship with AI. This version I’ve made here is entirely organic in the guitar playing, programming (if that counts), arrangement and improvisation - elements that AI cannot replicate yet. The only AI generated thing you hear here is the vocal track the guy originally prompted. Using AI as a tool to reinterpret ideas should be about adapting to new technologies, not undermining musicians. The focus should be on how we can evolve our craft to remain relevant in a changing landscape. Being actually able to play, improvise and perform live is going to be integral in the future. I’m personally hoping that AI can’t improvise or play live in the future. If it can, I’d like to think that I’ll have put in enough work over the years for people to prefer the human playing rather than the AI! 😅" Four comments by myself responded to the two comments from the previous image. The first two responses are to the user named None2None's comment: "No, you can't say the same thing about MIDI and samples. AI is trained on stolen work from musicians, MIDI and samples still require human input, alteration, and knowledge. AI music/art whatever is a tool for the wealthy to access skill, and a way to keep the skilled from accessing the wealth. And yes, I would expect him to hire a musician to do that, and then mix it, that's literally what's required to make genuine music, and as someone who spends as much time on music, it's part of the process and discipline and deserves to be respected, not automated out by a technology destroying creative industries and the world power supply." The two comments responding to Jack Gardiner reads as: " I think you're legitimately one of the most skilled modern guitar players, but if staying relevant requires the use of technology built off the theft of my fellow musicians and creatives, all while being insanely harmful to the world, perhaps relevance simply isn't as important or worth it. And there are already entirely AI albums on Bandcamp. There's a concerted effort made by dissillusioned people who aren't dedicated or respectful enough of skill, craft, or creativity to make the need to hire, pay, or invest time in someone like you, myself, or your colleagues and peers completely unnecessary."
