Many thanks to @chatcontrol for helping so much to coordinate and support efforts against chatcontrol! It was exactly the right initiative at the right time. 💜

Forget warn apps and mobiles: when it comes to neighborhoods there are many non-digital ways to help each other. Without needing permission from billionaires.

Whistles!

https://blockclubchicago.org/2025/09/17/in-little-village-residents-are-blowing-actual-whistles-to-warn-neighbors-about-ice/
LITTLE VILLAGE — Neighbors in Little Village are literally blowing the whistle on immigration agents in their community as federal agents stage operations and have detained hundreds of people locally in recent weeks. The Little Village Community Council has been hosting “know your rights” workshops since January to help neighbors defend against immigration sweeps in the neighborhood, home to one of the largest Mexican-American communities in the Midwest for decades. In June, after consulting with Los Angeles residents who have recently experienced immigration raids and a militarized federal law enforcement presence, the Little Village group added a new tool to its efforts: a bright orange whistle. “We had the idea of coming out with a whistle so people could hear that noise, and if they don’t have legal status, go the other way — run as quickly as possible to safety and to make sure they don’t open their doors,” said Baltazar Enriquez, president of the Little Village Community Council. A group of neighbors gather each Wednesday evening at the Little Village arch, 3100 W. 26th St., to distribute the whistles during the group’s “know your rights” workshops. About 1,200 whistles have been given out by the council, Enriquez said. “And other people started buying the whistles on their own and started passing them out, too,” Enriquez said. Credit: Colin Boyle/Block Club Chicago The Little Village group was inspired to use the whistles after talking to people in Los Angeles, where President Donald Trump deployed the National Guard earlier this summer. People from Los Angeles told the Little Village group they believed federal agents used stingray technology — which can monitor cellphones to collect personal information — during recent enforcement activity. Federal immigration officials have been documented using the “invasive” technology since at least 2020, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. The technology can “mimic cell-phone towers and force any cell phones in the area to give up personally identifying information — including phone numbers and unique device identifiers — all without an owner’s knowledge or consent,” according to the Chicago Reader. “So we said, ‘OK, if that happens here, how do we warn people?” Enriquez said. Chicagoans have tried to keep up with ICE sightings across the city, sharing information with each other and other rapid response groups. “Even people that have a legal status are scared because ICE will just come and kidnap you. It’s like a cartel type of action,” Enriquez said. “They’ll throw you in their car and they don’t explain anything to you.” ICE spokesperson Tanya Roman declined to share the total number of people who have been taken into custody since President Donald Trump’s administration began Operation Midway Blitz earlier this month. But on Tuesday, Rep. Lauren Underwood said ICE has made 250 arrests as part of the operation, according to ABC7. * * * **Support Local News!** **Subscribe to Block Club Chicago, **an independent, 501(c)(3), journalist-run newsroom. While #chatcontrol poses an existential threat to the Freiburg merlinux GmbH and its distributing #deltachat apps from within the EU to all stores worldwide, it would resist any chatcontrol legislation up to the German constitutional and EuGH courts.

If the EU based company would need to fold […]

PSA the last couple of hours the default #chatmail onboarding relay nine.testrun.org was sometimes slow taking ~10 seconds to accept and relay messages. It's now back to sub-second end-to-end delivery, after tweaking some connection limit.

As is often the case, #postfix has all the needed […]

@rachel you might try installing delta chat on one or more devices and "attaching" apps into the so-called "saved messages" chat. These apps run only on your end-device(s), are offline-first, fast and can be customized given some web dev skills. Existing apps are for example […]

@fluffykittycat in principle yes, but as cmdeploy run also automates TLS certificates via Let's Encrypt, and is shipping unbound for DNS resolving, adapting it to an offline-first use case might require some adjustments.
delta.chat
@fluffykittycat Have you tried installing a chatmail relay with "cmdeploy run"? What else would you try to get rid off to get even more one-click? Setting DNS records can't be automated, unfortunately.

#chatcontrol is a giant legal-technical quagmire and would erode privacy in times where we most need it. But let's talk about protecting children ... what chatcontrol claims to be about:

First, it's unproven that chatcontrol would help lower actual abuses.

Second, why not spend the many EU […]

The problem with #chatcontrol is deep and extremely significant. It would be a paradigm shift that implies state and corporate control of app developers and users, i.e. what you can install on "your" devices. It would empower Google, Apple and Microsoft to increase enclosure even more.

Just as […]

We modify designs to fit real word usage. Sometimes we engage in hundreds of hours of discussion and work just so that something becomes simpler on the surface. Case in point: the recent v2 releases radically simplified end-to-end encryption. No more lock icons or special encryption UI elements […]

What if a state tries to mandate us as #deltachat app devs/distributors to shut down a chat profile?

Nothing. It can't be done. We have no list of chat identities, have no handle or data about them, and don't mediate the message transfer.

However, EU #chatcontrol politicians and Russian […]

Delta Chat is hard to classify when your question is binary.

Federated or P2P?

#deltachat is more P2P than #briar in that we implement a P2P group model while Briar routes everything through a central administrator who centrally owns the group.

E2EE Messenger or e-mail client?

#chatmail […]

@koteisaev there has been considerable work into making setting up a chat easy, and it's not a common complaint that fresh onboarders don't discover how to get in contact. It is worthwhile to improve it. Feel free to make suggestions on https://support.delta.chat

@koteisaev hum, we don't advise on exchanging email addresses when you tap "new contact" but rather guide to sharing links (eg through WhatsApp) or scanning a qr code in a call or when next to each other.

@koteisaev thanks for the feedback. Did any of the home page or in app guidance made you try an email address for contact setup? Or where did you get it from?
