This is what it looks like when lawmakers take advantage of a moment instead of solving systemic problems ‼️

We stand with @ncblackalliance.bsky.social in calling out this failure and demanding real, meaningful justice reform. We encourage you to read the full statement on their profile.

Governor Stein even admitted the bill “lacks vision and ambition” and fails to address critical issues like mental health in the criminal justice system.

While it claims to stiffen bail for people showing “violent characteristics,” it simultaneously paves the way for executions to resume in North Carolina, decades after lethal injections were halted for being inhumane.

ICYMI: North Carolina Gov. Stein signed House Bill 307 into law and it’s deeply disappointing.

As our friends over at @ncblackalliance.bsky.social have pointed out, this legislation does nothing to make our communities safer.

Happy #LatineHeritageMonth! Since the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, many Latine families have come to NC seeking new opportunity. Today, they make up roughly 11% of our population.

Here's to the powerful communities building our future. 💜
The photo shows a handmade cardboard protest sign being held in the North Carolina General Assembly. On the cardboard sign, the words “THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND THIS LAND IS MY LAND” are written in black sharpie marker.

To all who celebrate: 🫶🏽✨

Happy Latine Heritage Month!
Happy Latino Heritage Month!
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

While words matter, the bigger picture is what this month represents: celebrating contributions, uplifting histories, and addressing the systemic challenges Latine communities face in North Carolina and beyond.

However you identify, we celebrate with you.

We recognize that no single word captures the full richness of our identities.

Not everyone identifies with terms like Hispanic, Latino/a, or Latine.

Many people connect first with their Indigenous roots, Afro-descendant heritage, or nationality (Chicano, Boricua, Mexican, Dominican, and more).

For us, “Latine” reflects our values of inclusion and respect.

It’s one way we can uplift diverse stories while also pushing back on colonial frameworks that have historically erased voices in our community.

But at the end of the day: how you identify is your choice. Every identity is valid. 💜

“Latine” is gender-inclusive, anti-colonial, and language-accessible. ➡️ It allows us to honor the many communities we celebrate this month without forcing gendered endings like “Latino” or “Latina.”
Graphic with a purple background and colorful flowers around the top right corner. There is a democracy nc logo in the top left. The text on the graphic reads “What is the difference between Hispanic, Latino, and Latine?

HISPANIC This term was created by the U.S. government and is often associated with Spanish colonization. It can also exclude Indigenous, Brazilian, and other non-Spanish-speaking groups.

LATINO This term doesn't relate to language, but instead encompasses all of Latin America. However, many activists have argued that the term's masculine form excludes an entire group of identities.

LATINE This is a newer term that is more easily pronounced than "Latinx" and can be used in plural forms. It can be used to refer to a group of people of multiple genders or for a gender-nonconforming individual”

Text at the bottom reads: “You don’t have to look a certain way to identify with these terms”.

We’ve heard the questions about why we use the term Latine... and we want to be clear about why it matters.

Let’s talk about it. 🧵
