Because certainly there's no reason why this history might be terrifyingly relevant right now, here's a link to preorder @stschrader1.bsky.social's "Blue Power" on how police in the US organized to exempt themselves from democratic oversight and control: redemmas.org/titles/48838...

Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye sold just 2,000 copies in its first year. Today, it’s a number many authors can’t recover from. Writer @tajjaisen.bsky.social examines how the publishing industry’s sales track can make or break careers before they even begin: thewalrus.ca/the-publishing-i...

Tylenol jokes drift into anti-disability and misogyny which is so fucked up.

this Tylenol business uncovers the depths of misogyny. I mean these people despise women and mothers and mothering and are finding ways to destroy their kids by implying autism is a disease (impure, passed on) and by and shoring up eugenic thinking. brainless violence.

If you, like me, are the parent of a neuro-atypical child dreading this autism press conference, please remember: These are the people hurting our kids. Not us. They are the ones stigmatizing and pathologizing them. They are the ones peddling untested science. And we should be very, very angry.

One of our most anticipated September books is feminist theorist Chandra Talpade Mohanty's "Insurgent Visions," which explores methods of anticapitalist resistance to radically transform everyday life. buff.ly/Kn3Bk2m
Cover of Insurgent Visions: Feminism, Justice, Solidarity by Chandra Talpade Mohanty. The cover features a bold, abstract illustration in red, pink, black, and teal tones. Stylized human faces and a human hand overlap with patterned abstract shapes in a collage-like composition. The larger human face is arranged adjacent to and underneath shapes that evoke a brain and spinal column respectively.

5. Sometimes it’s hard to see extractive and thiefy types because you are, say, wholeheartedly committed to a new world view or whatever. Thiefies are in love with binaries and punching down—they are hard to see because you think they share your Weltanschauung. They don’t.

4. It’s okay to read a theorist or theory doesn’t work for you and abandon it. You don’t have to live with a theory that despises you and your ideas.

3. If your theories of black geographies don’t include (subtle or not) critiques of nationalism, empire, patriarchy, and filial geographies, then you are not theorizing black geographies.

2. If you don’t understand Sylvia Wynter, instead of complaining that it’s too hard or distant, read something else rather than watering it down or drowning everyone else out with your complaints. Also, don’t be rude to the few junior scholars who read Wynter deeply.

1. If “the black Atlantic” is in your book title, I expect citations of the book, The Black Atlantic.
