Before I close out this thread, I want to mention that the results for recommendations are in! I'm not sure what order I'll be doing these in or even when I'll get around or if I'll manage all of them but thanks so much to those who gave me recommendations.

Whew! That thread was absurdly long and not helped by the amount of gaps between when I'd post entries, but I did also honestly need that time given just how long-winded I am and how many thoughts I had to share.

I always say "play weird games" and I really want to emphasize that. Passion projects like this are what keep the medium from feeling stale, and the people developing those absolutely could use the support.

I wholeheartedly believe these games are two that I think everyone should try but that I know only a handful will actually stick with to the end. But those who are willing to see things through will be rewarded with one of my favorite video game experiences I've ever had.

-managed to convince a few to give the game a try. It's such a fascinating experience and I genuinely want to see it get more love and attention. There are so few things like it. Also the soundtrack and art style are incredible, as is the writing and puzzle design.

-a completely single-player game. There is a lot to unpack and I truly don't wish to say too much, but the themes of motherhood and freedom are really fascinating. I'd love to discuss my own feelings and thoughts about it more with those who have experienced the game, and I'm thankful I've already-

-puzzles, without an end in sight. I played this alongside my partner and it was so rewarding to discover new things and share our thoughts on characters as we watched the story unfold, and I really think it's a game best experienced with a friend or two to talk about it with despite being-

But through the flashbacks provided at each resting spot between zones, you begin to fill in some of those blanks and start asking new questions, engaging with the characters and the story and try to puzzle out motivations while you navigate through increasingly difficult and deceptively simple-

Now, Void Stranger. A sokoban puzzle game with the unique mechanic of swapping tiles around as you navigate to the stairs of each floor and delve into the mysterious Void. You're provided so little context to start of who you're playing as, why she's here, or what this place even is.

-we do see from the rest of the cast both in-game and in promotional material is fun.

Though the narrative aspect is a lot more understated than in Void Stranger, the story of cycles and breaking free, and all the Buddhist theming, is really interesting to pick apart. Erasure manages to carry a lot of the heavy-lifting for characterization and charming dialogue, though I'd say what-

But being more accessible doesn't make it any less rewarding, as some of the boss fights still offer a real challenge to overcome and the game feels so stylish, both in its aesthetic but also in how it feels to move around and shoot through the levels with your various weapons.

-shmups, the fact that this game doesn't ask you to 1CC it to see the full story makes this feel significantly more generous. It also doesn't punish the player for making use of stage select if they need to. And despite a lack of defensive options, it never feels too punishing outside of the finale.

ZeroRanger is a shmup that's surprisingly beginner-friendly for something in a genre that's known for turning people away very easily. It provides plenty of continues through cumulative scoring so each failed attempt allows future attempts to be more lenient, and while I know that exists in other-
