I get people are mad, but I don’t hate it. At the end of the day, if sharpe is going to be that guy, he has to be that guy. If he takes a leap, he takes a starting job. Playing 30 minutes a game off the bench instead of 30 minutes a game starting isn’t going to change his development arc.

In short: BPA. You take the best player and deal with the roster building later. Also, what are the odds that both are superstars, no matter how much you believe in both? And if both are all NBA caliber centers, is that a bad thing? You just get a ridiculous haul to trade one?

10-15 heaves a year could drop your 3 point percent by 3-5%. The difference between a guy shooting 40% vs 35% is probably 5+ million a year in salary.

23m dead cap for half a decade is crazy.

I think Jrue is a wildly different situation. Ayton and Simons want a full time starting role and to be a focus of the offense. Jrue has taken lesser roles in the offense the last few years. He’s great because it gives the young guys more offensive workload while having a competent vet around them.

Seems like they wanted to offload the two vets that wanted full time starting positions and some focus in the offense. I get it from both sides. Ayton (and Simons) didn’t wanna give up their roles, the team didn’t want those roles to continue. So a move was inevitable.

He was cap filler. Portland got Camara to take his contract. And Phoenix paid a first to offload Nurkic. In retrospect, Portland won that and I’d do it again without hesitation.

Seems pretty clear the wanted to be rid of the vets that wanted focus in the offense, and held/added vets that were good role players they don’t need offense designed for them.
All in all, clear the way for the youth.

I wouldn’t hate it depending on other moves. They could find a deal for Williams and get a pick out of it, then sign an ok vet center to be the third guy in the rotation, especially if he could shoot a bit. Positive asset management and youth development. Success.

Grant is a really curious point for the rest of the offseason. He can’t start. He just can’t. But will he accept a 6th man role, and very little focus of the offense? Or does he need to be moved too.

I never understood why people thought they were win now moves. They’re clear the runway for the youth moves.

Playing their young guys and including a few vets that are good with reduced supporting roles. And shedding the vets that don’t want supporting roles and want to be primary guys on a team.

If he’s a rotational player for a few years he’s a successful pick. A starter at any point and he’s a great pick.

Doesn’t feel like there’s any chance that all 3 vet centers are on the roster by the end of the summer.

Yeah, a good vet guard simply sets the table for everyone else making their lives easier. Jrue is absolutely that kind of guy. Also good off the ball. He definitely seems like one of those guys that teammates say “he was a main reason why my career was successful” years after they played with him.

10% seems high. What’s the conversion of seconds to get the #10 pick. Feels like it would be like 70-80 second round picks.

Simons was a very bad compliment to the two guys they want running the offense. Jrue is a -great- compliment to them. This should not be downplayed as a huge factor.

These two couldn’t be much more different. How in the world is Simons a young Jrue in any way?

But also keep Jrue. Jrue, Book, Tou, and Deni is a group that could be really fun.
