me too... I remember at three years old visiting a neighbor's house and seeing a Pileated Woodpecker land on a tree right outside their kitchen window! On the other hand, drawing is not my forte though

These maps show changes in fertility rates but do not indicate that "population has been dropping around the world." A better map of current trend is at upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/co.... There are very few countries that show substantially negative population trends.

Full respect to George Schaller as a legit old school wild man. Vividly remember Peter Matthiessen's description of trekking with "GS" in the Himalayas in The Snow Leopard.

Yes, I just learned about this yesterday as well! I had also assumed the arms were revolving in concert with the stellar orbits, but no! The. wikipedia article for Density Wave Theory gives a good explanation with video animations of the density waves

The monument constructed by Isetnofret, Merenptah's daughter, fell last night. I was asleep and heard nothing, but from the fallen limbs and shattered visage, there must have been a terrible crashing. By the time I was awake there was nothing to hear but the wind upon the lone and level sands.

Sheesh, I 100% thought that Robert Service was throwing shade when he called one of his characters a Nimrod in Ballad of the Ice-Worm Cocktail (c. 1910?). Definitely intending "great hunter" from context after all. Watta maroon I am!

American Goldfinch - eBird
Small finch. Sharply pointed bill is pink in summer, grayish-brown in winter. Small head, long wings, and short, notched tail. Adult males in spring and summer are bright yellow with black forehead and wings. Females are dull yellow below and olive above with two distinct wingbars. In winter, they are drab, buffy-brown. Active and acrobatic. Sometimes in large numbers at feeders or on ground below. Found in weedy fields, cultivated areas, roadsides, orchards, and backyards.
