Blew off office work today to go help with a post-Davis Fire reseeding volunteer effort in Davis Creek Park organized by the park and Nevada Div of Wildlife/Forestry. Hopefully we get some precip to help all those grasses, forbs and shrubs come up!

Join the Laughlin lab and our new NSF funded project! Awesome opportunity to visit forests across the western US and examine the functional basis of demographic responses to drought and wildfire.

Great PhD opportunity with an excellent supervisor:

Quantify traits of tree species across the western US to determine how tree populations and forest communities will respond to drought and fire.

yeah the emotional thing was throwing me off.
dendromecon27.bsky.social
I guess interchangeable with intuitive. I would say things like "my gestalt feeling is that this is a euphorb but I couldn't tell you why".

but according to the internet, its "an emotional experience perceived as a unified, holistic whole, rather than a collection of individual thoughts"

I think that I have been using gestalt incorrectly my whole life.

Hell ya. Oct 18 No Kings protest, y’all, be there!!!
A white pick up truck with a black tailgate that has the words “NO KINGS” on it and the date October 18, 2025 and a QR code so that people can presumably look up the protest. This is all in a residential neighborhood.

I’m still all in on the shutdown, but this article misrepresents not only the person NPR interviewed—who went out on a huge limb!—but every Federal worker I know.
dendromecon27.bsky.social
“Norton fears she could be laid off during the shutdown or fired for speaking out.”
dendromecon27.bsky.social
What’s with this headline, @npr.org ?

The article is based on a single NIH employee saying she is, in fact, scared of being RIFed in a furlough or fired for speaking up. She just doesn’t think it would be any worse than what is already happening.

BIG DIFFERENCE.

Why some federal workers aren't scared by the threat of shutdown layoffs
Some federal workers support the government shutdown, even as President Trump threatens to use this moment to lay off employees and cut funding to programs.

The new Wiley journal review system is an absolute nightmare. Editorial assistants have been replaced by a clunky, AI-enabled website that makes it harder to find and invite reviewers. Associate editor workloads have increased. I'm not convinced the invitations to reviewers are even going through.
dendromecon27.bsky.social
I wonder if a move to AI helped lead to the situation wherein I asked for page charges for two months and Wiley finally sent them Oct 1 when the lapse in appropriations started 🤣😭. No $ for you, Wiley.

I have been bugging Wiley publishing to send me an invoice for 2 months because I have no idea if I’m gonna have a job for very much longer and I need to pay for page charges and they ended up sending me that invoice on Oct 1, the day the gov shutdown. What a joke.

So Speaker Johnson gave the congress another week off. Paid of course, while they shut the govt down.

The GOP has made it clear they have no interest in compromise with Dems. So they will have to figure how to reopen their govt that they closed.

And they get another vacation

It’s the capitalism, folks!!! Turns out that both sides can be annoyed at the spoils of that paradigm.

Striped shirt guy definitely got shoved in a locker during high school and is now taking it out on others.

Really? Because it seems like the system is down to me.

Why isn’t every single state, university, and non profit suing Vought for intentional negligence? The guy should be flooded with suits that make him individually liable
dendromecon27.bsky.social
It’s because the FY 25 budget came in so late that no one had a chance to spend it. Supervisors who are willing to go out on a limb are using that to pay people. I read in an article that this is happening at the Smithsonian as well. But at USFS it’s unit by unit.
dendromecon27.bsky.social
It’s all about the supervisor. Ours went rouge and made all of us exempt.
dendromecon27.bsky.social
It’s all so bizarre and needless to say, inefficient
