Then as now, the institutions that could stanch the bleeding are the clergy, the judiciary, and the military. If they choose to do so.

On the other hand, perhaps such a unified protest of the bishops would have taken place if thousands of angry Christians had stormed the doors of the parsonages.

Last week in DC for Fulbright Advocacy Day had a remarkably calming effect on me. I went filled with anger and fear. I left knowing that thousands upon thousands are working hard to avert this constitutional crisis.

You won’t see them on the news or read about them in Substacks. But they are there.
