In Jan 2024, the ICJ said Israel was committing "plausible genocide". Around the same time many major US newspapers released stories about UNRWA having employees tied to Hamas. Those stories were fabricated by Israel, but never corrected. But were used to justify starving millions of Palestinians.

Social media works like slot machines, giving you tiny dopamine hits. But the thing that makes it addictive is that you never know when the big award comes. You mostly get boring stuff, losses, in between the big wins and funny videos.

#TIL foreign diplomats in NYC do not need to parking tickets. But also there is a correlation between the number of parking tickets and the amount of corruption in the home country's government.
Unfortunately American diplomats do not have immunity, so this cannot be used to measure US corruption.

Israel has prevented any food from going into Gaza, while running a program where they give an extremely small amount of food out to starving Gazans. And it is not by coincidence that every few days or so it seems the Israeli military opens fire and kills a few dozen Gazans waiting in line.

When you see a headline criticizing some weird sounding research study, that is usually bad reporting. A headline that says "scientists give sweets to dogs" could describe research that made insulin. "Researchers massage gila monsters" lead to the wildly successful SLP-1 drugs like ozempic.

If you have Netflix, you should watch The Residence. One of the better murder mysteries. Stars Uzo Aduba. Bit slow, repeats a lot of information. I really wish I took notes because that would have been fun to figure out before the reveal.

#TIL Facebook has learned to notice when people are emotionally vulnerable. Then they used the info to sell to marketers so they can target them in these moments. A 13yo girl deleted a photo of herself she felt bad about, and then was immediately served ads for beauty products and weight loss.

#TIL Once, a study showed that the more boys an individual have birth to, the more likely the younger ones were to be gay. Turns out that was wrong, slightly. Newer research shows the more older siblings you have, boy or girl, makes you more likely to be gay.

#TIL media talking about runaway crime in a particular area correlates with gentrification of that area. In many cases the first actually precedes the second, specifically when cities are giving massive tax breaks to outside developers, rather than paying for community services.
