Kirkliston Parish Church near #Edinburgh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 has early origins, some of its Norman Transitional features like this doorway surviving later alterations.

Recently I dendro-dated two timbers in the bell tower to AD1203, a first scientific date for construction of this Norman church.

The photo shows a complex round arched carved stone doorway of Norman or Romanesque style. A series of multiple columns with carved capitals line each side of what is now a blank stone wall where the door would have been. The arch above has many concentric arcs of carved stone including chevron designs amongst their variety. The doorway has been moved to this south wall from perhaps the west end in significant alterations of the 17thC. Photo copyright Coralie Mills 2021.
