Thomas pressed a hand against her forehead. She grabbed his wrist, digging in with her fingernails. He didn’t flinch. A sharp, lancing pain shot through her skull as the whole world was abruptly thrown into sharper focus. Penny bucked, kneeing him in the ribs as layers of spellwork peeled away. There was a sudden, terrifying, nauseating awareness of her brain as a collection of cells, a folded, fatty mass. The NDA had nestled in every crevice of cerebrum and cerebellum, and the Dragon of Loss tore it all away with the energy of a man rip-starting a chainsaw.
The clarity was so pure and so painful she almost came.

She flapped experimentally. There was no ground to lift of from anymore. She flew through the featureless Bright, seeking Concord.
As ever, there was the temptation to stay. To be fully Herself again, here in the Bright. The body called Niamh would die, of course, but Niamh was going to die in forty to sixty years anyway. Less than that, given how much she smoked. Here she could be the Dragon of Prophecy again, worshiped by some, feared by others. Here her soul could inhabit a body that fit, and that was such a profound, almost physical longing that it slowed her flight, savoring these moments of freedom.
But it couldn’t last. Some psychopomp would find her and shove her back into the cycle of death and rebirth. Or worse, her enemies could find her and bind her like any other demon or ghost, draining the power of her soul like a battery.

Penny shook her head. “No, my position didn’t require it until now. I sort of thought of it the way you’d think of any prison. There it is: hope you never have reason to be there.”
Her boss laughed. “Of course. We don’t encourage casual visits for a reason. Many of the inmates are highly dangerous, we need to limit their interactions with outside consciousnesses.”
“And that’s where we’re keeping the dragon.” The elevator dropped rapidly enough to make Penny’s ears pop. Dr. Graham just sighed and rubbed his face with a hand.
“Yes. It’s where we’re keeping the dragon. It’s a considerable convenience for The Pacific Institute, and an incredible security risk for the Vigiles Draconi. Especially with at least two adult dragons in the area.”
The elevator doors opened on a dim, beige hallway, lined with dim, beige doors. All along the walkway were signs posted in multiple languages: WARNING. RADIATION HAZARD. THAUMATURGIC HAZARD. TRESPASSERS WILL BE VOID AND SHOT.

Like the opera i have two MCs: for Tamino theres Marie Fontaine, a fisherman's daughter who joined the aeronauts out of Patriotic Duty, and for Pamina we have Princess Shurra, daughter of the dragon empress who was press ganged due to a rejected suitors schemes.

The tension headache started between her shoulder-blades, sending vining tendrils up her neck and into her scalp to embed there. Fuck that, the gods made acetominophen for a reason. She strode into her apartment and tossed twice the recommended dose into her mouth, swallowing them dry.
Find the parameters. Define the space you control. Polite conversation was safe. Sex was safe. But conversations touching on magic— a hammer blow inside her skull confirmed the suspicion — were not safe.
There had to be an easier way than trial and error. The nondisclosure agreement was a contract, a physical document with terms and conditions that she had signed upon her hiring. Nine years ago. Fuck. The Penelope Merritt of today was scrupulous with her paperwork. Twenty-two year old Penny had been markedly less so. She’d come out of undergrad with a bachelor’s of science, most of the credits for her first master’s degree, and a serious kleptomania problem.

It was a busier than usual day, which did a great deal towards making her feel better after her nightmare. She’d managed to sell a leather chaise lounge that would cover her business loan for the next two months as well as the usual books and trinkets. A handful of members of the supernatural community showed up to arrange private trades as well, a service Niamh was happy to provide for a fee. So it wasn’t entirely surprising when the local Brimstone dealer, a stocky New Jerseyite by the dubiously legitimate name of Joey Fitz, arrived with a covered painting and an awkward, fretful teenager in tow.
“Miss Niamh,” he said, nodding to her. “We gots a problem.”
Niamh eyed him. “Do we now?” She looked at his companion. The teen wore black linen overalls with a “THEY/THEM” button prominently displayed underneath an unbuttoned plaid shirt. Their sleeves were rolled up, showing off a variety of stick and poke tattoos that Niamh was pretty sure the kid would regret one day. They didn’t look like trouble. Joey, with his shaved head, Adidas track suit, and poorly hidden firearm on the other hand, always looked like trouble.
