the internal lore of rationalists is so funny to me. no man. this thought experiment is not "famous"
A now-famous thought experiment asks us to imagine Gandhi refusing a pill that would make him want to kill, because he knows he would then kill, and the current Gandhi is opposed to violence. This misses the real problem by assuming the change could be evaluated in advance.

for being the original coddled generation, millennials seem to be doing a pretty good job of producing politicians who perform well with hostile audiences

vague idea: part of the usefulness of intentional states as theoretical posits is that they let us build a markovian psychological theory

Weirdly reassuring to know that some GOP pols are not assuming they’ll have power forever.

once again this is my general quasi-Quineanism where I don’t see how you’re supposed to divide up a theory into the non-metaphysical part and the metaphysical part

like if one theory posits entities the other doesn’t, what if there was an observer who is sensitive to those entities? (unless, I guess, the theories both actually entail that such an observer can’t exist)

I can understand observational equivalence of theories relative to some set of observations, but philosophers often seem to talk about a kind of absolute observational equivalence and, short of interderivability or some sort of isomorphism, I don't really know what that means

doesn't seem like the big bang or whatever has any privileged position over other moments when it comes to determining the history of the universe when combined with the laws of nature

isn't it kind of weird for people who think that the arrow of time isn't fundamental to talk about initial conditions?

also, I’m sorry but it’s actually not hard to maintain a normal attitude towards homeless people. I lived in a town whose main street usually had a homeless person every couple dozen feet, many of them with pretty severe and obvious mental disorders. then I moved to NYC!
