I like how this novel is immersive in Barry’s home culture while still being awfully British.

The narration switch in Chapter 2 shows how Barry wasn’t a good pretender, and his hidden homosexuality was always a thorn in their marriage.

MT: The character Milkman represents how non-physical violence is just as destructive as any other form of violence. The entire community was affected and disheveled by one man, yet they never realized or even ignored his part in it.

MT: Middle sister distances herself from everything and values her silence because she desperately seeks a fantasy life where every decision doesn’t put her life at risk.

“Gloriously I felt a comfort go through me, a sense of solace descend on me, all because she’d paused in her admonition to consider I might be telling the truth.”

This book is getting quite sad. I’m enjoying it.

"It came that I couldn't anymore relax and feel myself in flow, couldn't breathe properly, whereas before, the act of running brought breath through me, kept me in touch, filled me up."

Milkman has sucked away the little joy middle sister had without "doing" anything.

MT - The narrative style of following the narrator’s thoughts and jumping to different topics allows the reader to learn about the political scene while staying in the narrator’s small world. It helps you step into the narrator’s mind and learn everything she does.

“I didn’t know whose milkman he was. He wasn’t our milkman. I don’t think he was anybody’s…There was no milk about him.”

Then why on earth is he “the milkman”?

Honestly, the whole time I was reading this, I was wondering how many cops have Stephen King on their watchlist.

MT: Atonement is a cautionary tale of having too much confidence in your creative ability, and seeking the literary world for the wrong reasons.

Fun fact: I hate romance novels unless at least one of them dies. So the ending was chief’s kiss.

“How can a novelist achieve atonement when, with her absolute power of deciding outcomes, she is also god?”

“The journal preserved her dignity…And at a time when she was cut off from everything she knew — family, home, friends — writing was the thread of continuity.”

Briony was a lot more relatable in this section of the book.

I reckon if the title of this book means anything, then the exact opposite might happen.

MT: Ruth treated people the way she did because it gave her a sense of purpose. Since she had no control over her future, she could control her present and everyone around her. It was a desperate reaction to her own misery.

When looking at the past, Kathy’s narration seems to be bracing herself before every memory, over explaining and repeating a lot. It feels like a bit more than memory lane. Is this for her benefit or for the audience? #367britlit

MT: Miss Lucy feels guilty or at least at odds with the fact that the kids do not get to be normal. I think it may be because they are created simply to be used for whatever purpose.

My favorite thing in the world is when an author uses the title of the book within the work. It’s a lovely Easter egg I always search for, and it usually adds to the meaning.
