I used the new bike parking at the Nantes train station the other day. It has tons of amenities, incl. a vending machine w/ 🚲 essentials. The payment system still needs work & the cargo bike area doesn't have anchors like at Commerce but the train connection was seamless. Overall a good experience!

This protected, elevated, separated bike lane didn't exist 6 months ago. Slow implementation of safe mobility infrastructure isn't a spatial problem. It's a political choice. Pass it on.

You don't even have to go from example A, straight to Paris. There are mid point steps that are just as effective, albeit not as beautiful. This is an interim solution in Nantes: a gate. Closed during pickup/dropoff. Open other times. Something I shared with SDOT & Council staff colleagues in 2022.

Darn Legistar. Seems like that leaves some time for resident advocacy. How's that going?

Best view I got of of the decently large ladder truck smack dab in the center of Nantes' pedestrian zone because I was really impressed & surprised.

Today my family & I visited the newly closed Rue Maréchal Joffre in #Nantes - the newest in the city's central pedestrian street network, which, as part of the city's larger ~100km of pedestrian zones, will total 84 hectares by June & encompass most of the historic city center.

Aw he blocked me for doing simple math & challenging his *very* simple assertion that Americans are stupid. This guy, a political science professor, boils it down to "Americans are dumb" instead of challenging the electoral, media, & economic machine that led to this outcome.

The Nantes metropolitan government offers these longtail bikes for rent to residents on a monthly or yearly basis as a way to transition families toward the future of urban mobility & to promote a safer, quieter, and calmer city. One of my favorites mobility policies from anywhere in the world.

Saw this photo (of the supposedly safe bike route where my daughter & I were sideswiped by a hit & run driver) celebrating string lights on a small commercial strip that could benefit more from the replacement of this 2-lane street, wide enough to accommodate 5, into a pedestrian plaza. America.

A big reason for my family's move to Nantes was the city's social culture, rooted in solidarity. It's cool to learn that in 2025, nearly 30% of apts are social housing, promoting social mixing & providing an opportunity to put salaries toward daily needs, instead of landlord's investment portfolios.

Seattle's huge social housing victories from 2024 & 25 illustrate the tremendous advantage of looking beyond borders to find local solutions. Whether it's Vienna, Paris, Singapore, or Seattle - social housing builds community. I learned about this model by studying it on the ground. You can too. 1/2

I'm in love with Japanese IC cards for so much more than convenience. This short references 東京🗼but this system isn't limited to the world's largest city, Cards work across networks & function similarly across the country. More places should implement such a system.

Social cohesion & universal affordability are the goals. Social mixing is the pathway. Social housing is the vehicle.

Create communities where all have a say & where all have a home they can afford in a neighborhood they love.

Seattle, Vote Yes on Prop 1A.

For an American reference, 84 hectares is about 49 Walmart supercenters, or approximately the size of Seattle's central business district, plus Pioneer Square. You can have this too. Replace the mayor. Replace 8 of 9 CMs. Build a coalition to win & replace them.

Here we see the flags of the parties or the Nouveau Front Populaire. A coalition of leftist parties from the far-left NPA to the center-left Parti Socialiste & all in between. This movement is how the left will win an many levels

Aujourd'hui, des milliers de personnes ont marché dans les rues de Nantes pour soutenir les fonctionnaires. Je suis franchement inspiré par cet exemple de solidarité en action.

And more than anything, in this moment, I want to thank my former boss. My mentor. My friend. Thank you Tammy for all that you did for Seattle. Many will never know just how much you did, but we do. We'll remember. I hope others will lift you up in this moment too, because you deserve it. (16/16)

Fwiw, to those Americans following along, this is how folks in Nantes got to/from the protest. Biking, walking, & transit. I actually had to go several blocks away to park my bike because that's where I found an empty piece of sidewalk.

This morning, thousands protested outside the Hôtel de Région in Nantes against the austerity budget proposed by the region's president. It would slash arts and culture funding by 75% and cut social services, heavily impacting young people and women. This budget negatively effects everyone.
