Just want to point out how absurd this sounds to the rest of the civilized world. If a cop in my country kills someone, they're personally liable. Any time they even pull out their gun lengthy investigation follows.

I think that proper discovery needs to happen before any code is touched anyway. But attaching it to estimation exercise is useless. You can just demand the planning from your engineers. The thing is that with estimation the discovery is just a tool for estimation but it should be the main focus.

If the management has a budget set already you don't need estimates. You can just prioritize what needs doing and attempt it while staying in budget. You'll do that regardless of estimating or not. That's just how the work unfolds in practice. So why not skip the estimating?

I used to work in both setups. It depends on the "owner's" mindset more imo. But yes in this particular case it was probably easier because they didn't approach it as buying something in a supermarket.

The company owners. They wired me my check every month ;) JK it was a local startup funded by the founders from what they made on previous companies.

I used to work on a project were we'd just have kind of a list of priorities and worked on the top ones. Those which we didn't currently work on were subject to change. There were no deadlines just periodic status checks which helped the managment to steer the wheel. No estimates at all.

If the estimate turns out false the business decision was wrong then? Because estimates turn out wrong as a rule but the product still makes money. So imo the business decision success and ROI is detached from the estimate. Meaning the businessman should choose a different tool for their decision.

"Going trough the exercise of building and analyzing the plan" doesn't mean that you need to slap an estimate on the plan in the end.

Musí si tam furt cpát bezmozky a kriminálníky? Kde jsou ty časy, kdy politik odstoupil z funkce kvůli malinkému skandálku.

In Prague we've just a lousy bus which you can't even ride with your public transport prepaid card. And the bus drops you off on a "highway" of sorts that goes trough the city center.

Všechny ty ideály, které mají být údajně Americe vlastní a které tak vehementně tlačila všem na celém světě, jsou ochotni ihned zahodit.

I don't understand. Everyone in the US has guns apparently. Why don't people shoot the Nazis? Am I too naive?

When you build a wrapper around an LLM how surprised can you really be?

This. It's not only about being forced to work in a poor manner. I've been previously pressured into outright bad technical decisions because of this. And it's not just time pressure it can be plain power game - as it was with the bad technical decision I had to make.

I guess it's not clear what Dave means by KNOW. I assumed they've experienced it outside of their current job.

They're too low in the company hierarchy to expect to make any change happen.

Haha. True.

Cool. I moved to reading your posts in my e-mail inbox but I hope you get enough feedback on here to know that your work is appreciated.
