We extend social simulation with LLMs to a longitudinal setting by fine-tuning Temporal Adapters—here's how: 🧵

Ulrike Hahn asked me precisely that when the last talk I gave in her seminar had no Twitter data and lots about LLMs. However, I think the API problem is not as bad as to give up social media. We still have lots of Reddit, the Meta Content Library, Bluesky... it's just not as easy as with Twitter.

It's a collective action problem. If just a few people refuse, it's easier to punish them. If all academics do like you, officials can't punish them all. They would try to set a couple of examples to cause fear but they can't do it with everyone if most persevere.

It's supercool that Deepseek v3 is open, but it's pretty censored at least through the Android app. It refused to answer about Tiananmen and when asked about the capital of Taiwan, it deleted the output mid-generation.
