The topic of hydrogen amazes me due to the friction whenever it's mentioned. Musk is often the cause but it's also people who blame oil companies. If hydrides or ammonia work for hydrogen storage I say research it. People get triggered so easily just from mentioning hydrogen.

Ground-source I think you mean, it is very expensive yes. You can just use a hollow tube for a homemade version since the ground is warm below 2m a steady 15C, it gets warmer the lower you go. Commercial units use a special fluid and go deep.

I'm in Canada and switching from oil to propane. A heatpump is OK most times but not in the winter. It takes a long time to heat and to maintain the heat. It can switch to pure electric resistive heating at 4x the cost. Gas is cheap and a good backup 98% efficient. Solar+electric would be perfect.
