Reichstag fire type incident, freedoms curbed, opponents arrested, martial law declared supposedly for security.

As Plato put it “This and no other is the root from which a tyrant springs; when he first appears he is a protector.”

Trump will then declare himself President for life down that road.
If Russia is still fighting Ukraine in mid January it will have been doing so longer than the Soviet Union fought Nazi Germany.

For months now we’ve had speculation about what will be in the upcoming Budget and now we have speculation that the previous speculation to date was incorrect but it’s reported as though the government has changed its mind which is of course yet more speculation.

People keep telling me that Labour isn’t losing votes to Reform yet @yougov.co.uk poll today shows Reform potentially winning 231 Labour seats if there was an election now.

@rmcunliffe.bsky.social I don’t know what you had for breakfast but what a bravura performance on Politics Live.

Thank you for speaking so many uncomfortable truths!

The next general election will likely be in 2029 half a century after Trade Unions through the Winter of Discontent brought about the defeat of the incumbent Labour Party ushering in Thatcherism.

Now they seem intent on destroying another Labour government and bringing Farage to power… 😢😭

The Labour government has broken the same golden rule twice in its first year that being if you take money off people who already have it there is hell to pay!

They need to be innovative and find ways to take money people haven’t had yet so will not notice losing out on…

All of those who have left X are missing a treat today. The Tories, Reform, Oakeshott, Montgomerie, Hannan, et al are all venting their spleens and it’s hilarious.

Incredible today how those politically more to the right than the Conservative Party are all invoking Christianity as new way to create divisions in society.

It’s Mother’s Day in the UK but our non religious Prime Minister who has teenage children and a Jewish wife has made no mention of it.

He has posted on X for the 7% of the UK population who have been observing Ramadan.

An own goal that plays right into the hands of Reform.

If Reeves doesn’t announce tomorrow the ending of the state pension triple lock after the rise already announced for April 2025 then it will be with us beyond the next general election being an ever greater drain on the nation’s finances and the tax burden of the young.

It’s always emotionally difficult to deal with unexpected events that it wasn’t possible to see coming so spare a thought for Spurs fans this evening as they struggle to come to terms with the double whammy of winning a match in the league and keeping a clean sheet!

Enjoyed Politics Live today as @fisherandrew79.bsky.social and Danny Finkelstein always articulate their positions clearly and politely. I don’t by any stretch agree with either on every issue but it makes such a refreshing change to have intelligent reasoned debate.

In 1888 Bismarck told the Bundestag that ‘the most important political fact in the modern world is that the British and Americans speak the same language’. Today the important political fact could be that Donald Trump is half British.

Well what a surprise it is for @sophyridge.bsky.social to have Richard Tice on the show.

The Lib Dems have 72 but Mr Tice is on more than them all combined.

Maybe he should be tagged as a ‘friend of the show’
