I also convened a hybrid session titled “Unveiling Hidden Geographies: Creative Representations of Urban Geopolitics” with Houwei Fu and Nurul Atikah Ramli. Our session was sponsored by Political Geography Research Group—to which we’re so grateful 🥳

I got a very interesting question directed to all presenters in my session: “What is the genealogy of your study so that you’re now studying political geography?”

Well, considering my background in urban planning and urban analytics, the question means a lot.

Last week I presented my PhD research at @rgsibg.bsky.social Annual Conference in one of ‘New and Emerging Research in Political Geography’ sessions. Thank you for the convenors for creating a space for an invigorating discussion!

This study contributes to widening the conversation on human rights city by bringing Global South and small city perspectives into view. It also highlights the need to ensure that persons with disabilities are not only included symbolically but empowered as co-creators of the right to the city (3/n)

Using the concept of "overlooked-ness", not only did human rights city become an overlooked concept in Indonesian urban planning literature, but also how the rights of person with disabilities became overlooked within Wonosobo human rights city framework (2/n)

My newest article is now published by @politicsandspace.bsky.social!

I investigate the notion of human rights city and how it is vernacularised into peripheral Global South city of Wonosobo, Indonesia. I took the example of education as proximity-based rights for person with disabilities (1/n)
An article titled "What they should have talked about in human rights cities: The advocacy of overlooked disability rights in Wonosobo, Indonesia" which was published by Environmental and Planning C: Politics and Space

Last month I attended Association of South East Studies UK International PhD Workshop in Bangkok, Thailand. While I am a first timer in area studies, I gained a lot of great inputs for my doctoral study, particularly as spatial methodologies remain understudied in public participation.

Some would say it’s an inevitable milestone but personally it’s a huge one: Alhamdulillah I’m officially a Doctoral Candidate 🥳

Thank you so much @citygeographics.bsky.social and @sjg.dev for your immense support and guidance during the first year of my PhD!

I really appreciate the Committee as the conference’s vibes was great, with so many peers having great topics on a wide array of geography. Quite a lesson to be more selective on choosing conferences in the future.

Last week I represented @casaucl.bsky.social at @rgsibg.bsky.social’s Postgraduate Mid-Term Conference by presenting my doctoral study in the Geographies of Citizenship session. Definitely special as I got interesting inputs and encouragement for my upgrade viva next week!
Me in front of RGS-IBG buildings Me presenting the conceptual framework I’m using in my doctoral study. I proposed three factors influencing scaling process within citizen reporting systems: economies of scale, politics of scale, and sociolinguistics of scale.

- Age data is unreliable! But the report content remains important anyway
- Pre-determined agenda of government manifest in the design of citizen reporting systems.
- Further investigations needed to see the economic, political, and sociolinguistic dimensions of citizen reporting platforms.

Initial findings:
- Citizen reporting systems are among emerging means of digital public participation
- Different areas have higher values of socio-economic and demographic variables of digital participation
- Only 4 variables of reporting behaviour can explain 89.2% of report counts [cont.]

It’s been long overdue (~1 month!) but I presented my initial findings in Social Media Geopolitics session at #AAG2025 in Detroit last month—all thanks to @casaucl.bsky.social Doctoral Student Conference Fund. My study revolves on digital participation in Jakarta, using government-app called Qlue.

We employed quantitative & spatial analysis and found three dominating patterns of megaregionalisation process in Java Island: small cities supporting metropolitan areas, small cities showing a strong pattern of desakota formation process, and small cities slowly emerging as sub-centres.

Officially opening up 2025 publication year with this piece!
