Here is a current view of the Matterhorn in Switzerland with bright red aurora and green proton aurora spots.

Solar wind data are turning a bit sour for extreme low-latitude aurora for the U.S., but the system is still pumped up enough for Europe!

Beautiful arch and now you can also see the green, meaning that it's moving southwards. It's green below and red on the top, so if you are far away, ypu only see the red because of the curvature of the Earth.

That's actually not true in my little corner of science, I checked my citations and of various others in spatial data science and they are pretty much even across this entire period. The subsidciplines the checked seem to be on ecology/biology side, I am not sure it is science-wide.

For the first time, #Copernicus Sentinel-2A has captured night‑time images of Earth, spotting gas flares in the Middle East, wildfires in India and even fishing boats in South Korea.

The results from these tests are being used to prepare for Sentinel‑2 Next Generation.

One possible (or even likely?) outcome of the LLM and genAI craze might not be the continued death of expertise, but its rebirth.

When nothing can be trusted as real, people will crave humanity, human-verified reporting, and human-generated information. The bullshit machines will be shunned.

Happy new year! My all sky camera imaged the sky every 15 seconds and this picture shows what happened in the sky in 2025. It shows the length of the night and day with the hourglass shape, the monthly lunar cycle with the diagonal bands, the elevation of the Sun at local noon, and lots of clouds.

As she flew 400 km above Earth, NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers caught a gigantic spark with blue flashes and red tentacles shooting upwards. In the image, a blue jet propagates into space towards the upper layers of the atmosphere. The beam of light is followed by red flashes spreading like tentacles across the sky. The magnificent event lasted less than a second.

Here's my favourite example - I was looking for information about a researcher named Vors, at U of Sydney many years ago. I love how the LLM got stuck in the alphabet - exactly what you'd expect from next-token prediction!
A Google AI overview offering "information" (none of it true) about a researcher named Vors at University of Sydney. The LLM offers the name of the President of the university, Andrew T.T.D.B.D.K.F.K.L.M.N.O.P... and continues like that for eight full lines of letters going repeatedly through the alphabet!
