Hey! Got a bunch of new followers, so time for an intro!

I'm a PhD student studying the multilevel society of the Superb fairy-wren. Passionate about all things birds, ecology and behaviour!

Stay tuned for science content and fieldwork stories!

Hey there! Hard to say at this stage. Most groups are still breeding, which hopefully means a slightly longer breeding season. But hard to say whether the numbers will increase. We're hoping for a less extreme winter next year!
We heard the Campbell park population is not doing great at all...

Today marks most chicks banded in a day during this breeding season! They are definitely going better now that the currawongs have some cicadas to snack on 🦗 #SFW_ANU #ecology #birds #superbfairywren

Within a pitcher plant, bacteria break down prey to feed the plant. As the leaf ages, bacteria become less diverse, but more efficient at degrading insects. It appears that species that are strong degraders are weak competitors.

We're in the middle of this year's breeding season now and a new wave of nests will be hatching soon!
Also, amazing picture by @franhckr.bsky.social of a male provisioning chicks. Soon they'll also have be fitted with new shining colour bands!
The breeding season is in full swing! After some troubles with currawong predation, most of the groups are on their second or third nest, and all the parents are busy provisioning their young 🦗🐦 30 chicks banded so far! #superbfairywren #SFW_ANU #birds #ecology

Winter means.. communal roosts! 🦅🐦🦜

But why do birds form such roosts? In red kites, young single males are the most frequent visitors. Once paired, birds roost more solitarily, often together as a pair.
