This is a fun read but it doesn’t really reckon with the fact that these theories are inherently racist, rooted in the idea that ancient non-western civilizations *couldn’t* make these structures. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/11/o...

Yes- I'm only a couple of weeks in but so far I'm really enjoying it. It's exciting starting the day with something new.

Doing the 1001albumsgenerator.com thing.

I listened to this all the way through (I'm determined to give things a fair shake), and now i want some kind of award or medal because this album was *torture*. Self indulgent snivelling pish.

Meal team six.

The gravy seals.

Are these not drop scones?
American Breakfast Pancakes are #RecipeOfTheDay! If I were writing this recipe now, I’d probably just call them Pancakes, as the thin, crêpe-style ones I grew up with are no longer the norm here. But whatever they’re called, they’re good! www.nigella.com/recipes/amer...
American Breakfast Pancakes
These are those thick, spongy American pancakes that are often eaten with warm maple syrup and crisp fried bacon. I love them with the syrup alone, but if you do want bacon, I think streaky is best. Y...

That is a terrifying prospect we're collectively unprepared for.

In 1931, German engineer Herr Richter attached 12 solid-fuel rockets to a bicycle, which were ignited by a large battery. One report says he managed to reach 88 kmh before being thrown from the bike. He wasn't seriously injured, but that's the last anyone heard of his Raketenrad.

Sledging!

I do wonder how many more times our weans will get to enjoy this as our winters get warmer.

Still, 2026 is the year of the Linux desktop.

Somehow Ubuntu decided my desktop didn't need any network interfaces this morning and I had to boot into safe mode using an old kernel to fix it. That'll teach me for evangelising Linux to the masses.

I hate all OSs equally (just some more equally than others)

Well said.

We'll probably have to, but the planned obsolescence of it makes me taste bile.

True- maybe I should turn browser sync off in Firefox.

This is a worthy quest, but a sizable proportion of my open browser tabs are unrequited searches for spare parts for our dying tumble dryer, what the error code on the dishwasher means and Python exceptions.

I should probably just nuke the lot...

Ah, New Year’s Day! That can only mean one thing. YES, THAT’S RIGHT! The 148th anniversary of New York Herald proprietor James Gordon Bennett Jr being banished from polite society for pissing in his fiancée’s fireplace, thus giving the world the phrase ‘Gordon Bennett!’ 🧵

The land has been year-walked. The future has been met in the lanes and ways. The cunning folk have conferred. On the doors of The Raven, The Woodwose's Crown and all the other pubs they use, the proclamation has gone up: 'This is the YEAR OF THE GREEN PATHS.'

It's over the sprocket holes so it's not a lazy shutter curtain.

Might be the light seals on the take up side?

Happy CET new year.
