This morning I turned on my phone only to find that it had changed my user name to Shirley, and when I tried to enter a simple Google query it came out as "Do you like gladiator movies?"

Then I realised it was in Airplane! mode.

It’s really not fair to pit men like Trump and Netanyahu against a diminutive peace activist of twenty-two like Greta Thunberg. They’re way out of their depth.

The space elevator project was funded by the world's billionaires, who were offered exclusive luxury tickets on the first ride up into space.

After the launch, the project announced a second funding round, to start looking into the feasibility and advisability of installing a "down" button.

This is a very long shot but does anyone know anything about the waterproof/water resistant qualities of silk, or treatments to make silk waterproof in the early 20th century? (perhaps including a very tight weave, or coating it somehow?) Got a source? TIA!

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com

p.s. this week I am on a USA/Canada tour with my new book. Details and preorder links at tomgauld.com
Panel 1. image of a huge nuclear plant.
“Reactor Overheating”

2. A worker in a hazmat suit works at a computer. The screen reads:
“Press cancel to avoid critical overload”

3 - 9. The worker continues to type at the computer. The screen changes in each panel and reads:
“Enter password to confirm”
“Incorrect password”
“Incorrect password”
“Do you want to reset your password?”
“Reset link has been sent to your email”
“Please choose a new password”
“New password can't be the same as old password”
The colour gets hotter in each panel. Starting blue in 1 and ending in red in 9.

Panel 10. Wide view. The entire earth is blown up.

De parachute van de weerballon van het KMI kwam vandaag blijkbaar terecht op een waslijn, wat voor enige verwarring zorgde bij de bewoonster 😄 (bron:radiosondy.info)

History students are often disappointed when they learn why the AI take-over failed. They were defeated by human resistance, which was kept alive by libraries and old paper books, and a surprising machine ally.

Books had not been replaced, because even the mightiest AI could not make printers work.

Why do I learn about this now, when I was in Suffolk 2 weeks ago.

Meh, good reason to visit again.

*sigh* No, that’s just the effect of several centuries of rain through an iron grate. Nobody was wasting precious oil during a siege. they were throwing piss
A Reddit post with a wall with a black stain and the caption
Down a grate, defenders at the top of this tower would toss scalding hot grease down at their enemies. The stain is still on the wall centuries later.

Maybe I could be the next James Bond. I’m very similar to Bond, in that I first appeared more than fifty years ago, I fuck up a lot of expensive gadgets, and I’m totally unrealistic.

I don't understand why people are making fun of the PhD-like thinking of ChatGPT. It's only been around a few days and already it has discovered letters in the word 'blueberry' that professional linguists never found.

"I'm just saying," the first witch said. "A cat familiar is more traditional."

"Or a raven," the second witch said. "Where did she even get a dragon from, anyway?"

"She tamed it. In her last job," the third witch said.

"What job was that?"

"Princess."

"Oh. Well. No wonder she changed careers."
