Xuening Kong showing results of her (freshly minted!) PhD research. Using Sentiment Analysis and Topic Modeling to address research questions. #MSUGlobalDH
Background information
My research:
*Chinese migrants to the U.S. - Mexico borderlands in the first half of the 20th century
*The Chinese migrants engaged non-state agencies to survive and settle down in a foreign land
**An important agency: mission churches
*'What's diaspora' (on Miriam-Webster Dictionary)
*a: the Jews living outside Israel
*b: the movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an established or ancestral homeland
Includes a sepia toned picture of a large group of asian people in front of a mission Research Questions:
*How did the mission churches give impacts on the Chinese migrants' lives? What did the churches do? >topic modeling
*How did the Chinese migrants comment on the role(s) of mission churches in their diasporic lives? >sentiment analysis Qualitative Research
*The mission churches effectively fostered a harmonious connection between Christianity and Chinese culture for Chinese borderlanders.
*Social welfare embraced by religious groups
**On the U.S. side: Racial exclusion
**On the Mexican side: warfare and instability
*English courses, etiquettes and even Chinese culture.
**An example: Mother "Fanton" giving English names to Children in San Diego
Includes a sepia toned picture of a small group of asian adults and children in front of a doorway.
