I am *so* excited to announce that I will be writing my first book! It’s about the woman who took on some of the most powerful men in sports, pushed to get women’s athletics into the modern Olympics, and whose efforts helped change how the world views who gets to be an athlete.
A screengrab of the Publishers Marketplace announcement for my book. It reads, "Investigations editors and cofounder at Defector Media Diana Moskovitz's THE WOMAN WHO STOLE FIRE, resurrecting Alice Milliat, the young, working-class widow who successfully fought the aristocratic Pierre de Coubertin to include women in the modern Olympics, pitched as FLY GIRLS meets THE WOMEN'S Hour, to Alessandra Bastagli at One Signal, at auction, by Ann Sproul-Latimer at Neon Literary (world). Rights: nicole.bond@simonandschuster.com."

The category is nonfiction: biography and the date on it is June 25, 2024.

Like before, please excuse me while I include another reminder that taking legal action like this to get public records costs us money. We could not do this without our subscribers! Every bit really helps.

I remain in awe of Courtney Smith for trusting me with her story when we barely had a website up and running.

And somehow our readers got her story out far and wide, even though we weren’t on Apple News and didn’t have gift links.

Thank you!

Well, this is quite the honor.

Courtney’s Story has been selected by Apple News as part of its 10 years, 100 unforgettable stories series.

If you use the app, scroll down today to A Decade of Apple lNews. That will take you to the sports selections, including this one from @defector.com
A screen grab of the Apple News spotlight page. It shows Apple News Spotlight at the top. Below is the headline: How Urban Meyer and Ohio State failed Courtney Smith. The art is of a woman standing atop a giant Ohio State football helmet.

Ah man. Just goes to show that you never know what it will be, all that matters is that it works. It’s great that you found the pod!

But still. There's my time figuring out what the heck is going on. There's finding a person. There's paying that person fairly for their time, which was easily half a days work. Any money you give us goes directly to all of this!

First: Nobody at the Miami-Dade clerk of courts would answer my phone calls. Nobody. I tried everything. So I had to pay another journalist to go to the courthouse, physically make a request, and then physically get an answer!

We got lucky. I used to work in Miami and could ask around easily.

First blog back from book leave is on why there hasn't been more follow-reporting on the latest domestic violence allegations against Tyreek Hill.

It's a gift link but I'm also gonna talk on here about how your subscriptions and/or contributions make this possible!

Screenshot of the following text: "This, typically, would be followed by other news outlets getting copies of the court records and confirming these details with stories of their own. But if you’re wondering why the reporting on this seems to have petered out after TMZ's, there's one reason: Nobody else can get a copy of the document.

"On Thursday, a reporter for Defector Media requested from the Miami-Dade County family court division a copy of the document reported on by TMZ, specifically the amended petition. The clerk declined to release it to the reporter, saying the document is 'locked' and considered confidential. When the reporter asked to speak with another staffer about it, the clerk simply repeated that the record was locked, and she added that "a lot of folks" have been attempting to obtain a copy of it."
