This is one reason I frequently refer to the United States of “North America”, even if it doesn’t roll off the tongue that smoothly.

Even if at times it might be limited to encouragement that better times are possible when we believe we can do “hard things”. For people like us, do things like this.

Happy Monday and let’s crush this week…

Now I see a role reversal. Many are indeed leaving or have already left. I honestly see more opportunities in Colombia, but my timing is to be back here and I hope to make my small little dent.

While my family may have left Colombia for the UK while I was in year 10, just as the mass exodus of talent started (the largest export was not what you think it was, but talent), I always believed in the potential of Colombia, choosing to return many a time.

We’ve underinvested for far too long in the UK. Living off the riches and fat from the 80s, where London became the financial centre of the world. Inequality this time around is making things worse.

The good news is that I’ve noticed that people are finally awakening, and thanks also to strong voices such as the passionate @garyseconomics.bsky.social who is waking others up.

It certainly carries a different weight, but maybe now it’s justified to call the UK “third world” as the wake-up call has been overdue, and drama is needed.
March 31, 2025 at 6:44 AM
I’ve never been a fan of describing countries such as Colombia as “third world” instead of choosing “developing countries”, but coincidentally, this week I learnt the origin is actually political, which now makes total sense.

5️⃣ Do I need to mention Birmingham? No idea? Just Google that city + rats. Yes, like the ones normally reserved to the NYC Metro. 🚊

The government has decided to finally put pressure on councils to prove they are filling the potholes before any more coffers. 🚧

4️⃣ Need I say something about potholes? Ironically, Colombia had had a very bad reputation for them. But these days, every country I visit has better roads and motorways, including Croatia, Hungary, and Serbia.

Same-day appointment, blood tests and results within minutes, not weeks and months. Even those who have private medical care are having to wait for weeks to see a Doctor 🩺

3️⃣ Healthcare in Colombia has been far superior to the UK for many years. While visiting Serbia some weeks ago, some friends rated and recommended their local 👩🏼‍⚕️ and I can attest to how amazing they were. Effective, quick, and very good value for money.

2️⃣ The Bakerloo line has always had a bad reputation… but the graffiti levels are NYC Metro level. BTW, I’ve always described the NYC Metro as “third world” and not worthy of disqualification from the “World Capital” title.

1️⃣ In decades of commuting and travelling from Sussex and Surrey into London, I do not ever remember seeing someone begging for money for food. Something I’ve seen many a time in Colombia but dare I say less so more recently.
