“Enough already,” my mother snapped, and she picked up her pace. The five of us were making our way home along a narrow sidewalk, the bickering tossed back over a shoulder or shouted over our heads.

Deyani wiped the sweat off her brow as she looked out over the fields. The water trucks slowly pulled up to the farm. Deyani and the other workers quickly formed a line, clutching their empty canteens. Each worker received one pint as their ration.”
