Agreed - language which dignifies others is well and fine, but mandating a language shift is mostly more cognitive overhead for staff and can distract from troubleshooting why support actually sucks.

Usually, support workers have too many jobs and too little time. Nomenclature can't fix that.

In tech support we routinely rehash this conversation! It reminds me of the argument about 'homeless' vs 'unhoused'.

I think these arguments are less about what the cohort wants to be called and more about using the words to shape staff attitudes and behaviors towards people they're meant to serve.

At my work I've seen people unironically use AI to generate emails which are then AI summarized on the other end.

Creating a whole new layer of energy usage just so white collar workers can pretend to work harder than ever before 😑

What is especially unsavory is that most people don't care if a shop uses something like cursor to make programming faster, but would be incensed by generated art or music.

Lumping all these "AI" products together tries to smuggle generated art in with other, less controversial ML/AI tooling.

I don't like the feel of rigid straws so I do prefer the silicone, but I get it :)

We have the metal kind with the silicon bendy tip; the silicon has split on one over the years, but the straw can be used without them.

Rats are too generous a comparison for him xD

And of course thanks to @amosroddy.bsky.social - your spacey soundtrack set the perfect mood and has been floating through my head ever since finishing the game 🎵🚀✨

I always feel proud of Starbucks locations which unionize and leverage strikes, but I feel sheepish because there's no way I'd ever be buying the coffee when they're not striking for all the other reasons to avoid Starbucks 😅

I've been around the block and know what I support and why.

At least it looks like we agree on ending qualified immunity.

He is representing many of us very well. There's significant diversity in this district.
November 13, 2025 at 7:50 PM
I'm in your district and proud of your vote. The sweeps, the way they focus on removal before resources, are a performative waste of money.

People who claim they are compassionately run to help people first are either kidding themselves or ignorant of the realities on the ground.

I'm in D4 and worked with someone the other week to help them recover their dog and belongings after a destructive encampment eviction.

From what I've seen, these cleanups are not meeting expectations of dignity. People are being shuffled around, harassed, and given new problems rather than helped.

I'm starting to be persuaded that Schumer tried and failed to convince them to hold the line instead of helping arrange it. Still inexcusable when the stakes are this high, so I'm sticking with it: it's past time for a change.

Tens of thousands of Americans are projected to die due to the loss of the subsidies. Millions more will suffer the consequences of being underinsured.

The explicit point of the shutdown was to fight for those people with the only shred of leverage the Democrats had.

What a waste.

Please move to remove Schumer immediately as minority leader. He definitely helped facilitate this, and even if he didn't, his lack of leadership earlier in the year enabled it.
November 10, 2025 at 9:14 PM
You asked a question on the Internet that has an answer.

What I do know is that I spent a lot of time with someone who has been set back over and over by sweeps and harassment just the other week, and whatever is being done right now is falling short of treating everybody with dignity.

Finland does exactly that, it is pretty successful.

On homelessness, pretty much 💔

It feels like Portland is trapped in an endless, frenetic cycle of half-assing systemic fixes and swinging back to sweeps and criminalization.
